The Class A No. 1 rated WEM Buccaneer volleyball team won three more matches last week to imrpoive to 12-0 this season. The Bucs have won 24 straight games, including sweeps of Tri City United, Maple River, and St. Peter last week. WEM will compete in the Class A Showcase Tourney this weekend whiich will feature eight of the top 12 teams in Class A. The tourney will be Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22 in Burnsville. WEM junior Jaden Taylor carried the ball eight times for 219 yards and five touchdowns Firday, Sept in a 56-12 Buccaneer win. Brant Melchert scored two rushing touchdowns and Wyatt Storch added another for the Bucs, who rushed for 411 yards and eight touchdowns. The Bucs will travel to Norwood-Young America Friday, Sept. 21 to face the winless Raiders. For more on the GFW win, check out the Sept. 20 edition of the LIFE/Enterprise.

The start to what is expected to be an outstanding season for the No. 1 rated WEM volleyball team was just that...outstanding. The Bucs swept Triton, 25-16, 25-11, and 25-20 in the team's opening match Tuesday, Aug. 28 in Waterville. Thursday, Aug. 30 the Bucs will travel to Kenyon to face Class AA No. 5 rated Kenyon-Wanamingo. The WEM 16U Softball Team tied for 9th in the 16U Northern National Championships held Aug. 2 - 5 at Caswell Park in North Mankato. After dropping their first two games in pool play, the Bucs split four games in the bracket tournament. The two teams they lost two placed in the top five overall. The Waterville Indians amateur baseball team will be looking to secure a spot in the Class C State Tournament Friday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Indians will host Gaylord in the Region 6C semifinals. The winner will advance to the State Tourney. The loser will need to win two more games to advance. Waterville has not been to State since 2012. For the first time ever, the WEM volleyball team has been ranked No. 1 in the state of Minnesota. The Bucs, Section 2A runners-up last year, return all their players from that team this fall and were rated No. 1 in Class A by the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association July 25. The Waterville Indians and Morristown Morries amateur baseball teams will start Region 6C Playoiff action Saturday. The Indians will host Arlington at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4. Morristown will play Saturday at 4 p.m. in Jordan against Fairfax. Win or loss, Waterville will host a game Sunday. Morristown will either play at Jordan Sunday or host Lake Crystal. The Waterville Indians amateur baseball team finished off a successful regular season with a 7-2 win over Cleveland Sunday, July 29. The victory was the 13th in 13-60 League play, clinching the top spot for the Indians. Blue Earth finished with a 12-4 record, with two of those losses to Waterville. The Indians will host Arlington Saturday, Aug. 4 at 1 p.m. in the first round of the Region 4C Tourney. Morristown, the No. 4 seed from the 13-60 League, will play at Jordan against Fairfax at 4 p.m. Saturday. Both Waterville and Morristown will play games Sunday, Aug. 5.

A total of nine WEM track and field athletes were named to the 2018 All-Gopher Conference First Team. The boys had five selections. They were seniors Christopher Byrne and Taylor Glende, juniors Tyler Hermel and Tanner Ranslow, and sophomore Jaden Taylor. The girls had four selections. They were juniors MaeLea Harmon, Shleby Hermel, and Alexis Morsching, and freshman Toryn Richards. Check out the June 28 edition of the LIFE/Enterprise for more on the All Conference Teams.

A total of six baseball players and five softball players earned All-Gopher Conference honors this past spring. The honorees on the baseball team include First Team selections seniors Will Storch and Michael Ungs and juniors Bladyn Bartelt and Jayson Schneider. Senior Adam Rients and sophomore Grant McBroom were named to the Honorable Mention Team. Earning First Team honors for Buccaneer softball team were seniors Nicole Nuetzman and Hailie Tegmeier, sophomore Trista Hering, and freshman Brielle Bartelt. Senior Madeline Meskan was named to the Honorable Mention Team.

The first day of the Class A State Track and Field Meet at Hamline University provided some mixed results for the 10 WEM athletes competing. Junior MaeLea Harmon advanced into Saturday's 100-meter final with the second best preliminary time of 11.99, her best time ever. The 4 x 100-meter relay team (Harmon, Alexia Morsching, Shelby Hermel, and Toryn Richards) also advanced to Saturday's final with  the third best time of 50.22.

A fantastic run through the Section 2AA baseball tourney came to an end Tuesday, June 5 when Belle Plaine defeated WEM, 7-2, to end the Buccaneer season. WEM won four of six games in the Section tourney, including a 2-1 win over No. 1 seed St. Peter Tuesday night. WEM finished 3rd in the Section and finished with a 14-6 overall record. The WEM baseball team is one of four teams remaining in the Section 2AA baseball tourney after winning two games last week. The Bucs shut out Blue Earth Area 3-0 Friday, June 1 and defeated Blue Earth Area, 7-3, Saturday, June 2. These two wins came against teams who defeated WEM earlier in the season. The Bucs will host No. 1 seed St. Peter at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 5 in Waterville. If they win, they would play Belle Plaine 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game Tuesday. The Section 2AA Championship is scheduled for Thursday, June 7 in Waterville at 5 p.m.

The WEM basbeall team will host Blue Earth Area Friday at 5 p.m June 1. at William J. Grose Field in the Section 2AA loser's bracket quarterfinals. Blue Earth Area was defeated by St. Peter on Thursday. The loser of the game between the Bucs is eliminated. The winner will face Tri City United at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2 at 1:30 p.m. St. Peter and Jordan also play Friday in the winner's bracket semifinals. The winner will play at Waterville at 11 a.m. against Belle Plaine. The loser will face Le Sueur-Henderson at 4 p.m. in Waterville.

The WEM baseball team was defeated 5-0 by Jordan Wednesday, May 30 in the Section 2AA quarterfinals. The Bucs will now play Friday, not Thursday, as it was previously reported. WEM's opponent wil be either No. 1 seed St. Peter or No. 9 seed Blue Earth Area. These two teams have been rained out on Tuesday, May 29 and Wednesday, May 30. They are scheduled to play Thursday, May 31. If St. Peter wins, WEM will host Blue Earth Area Friday in Waterville. If Blue Earth Area wins, WEM would play at St. Peter Friday. Times for the Friday games have not yet been determined.

A number of WEM track and field athletes will continue their seasons after advancing to the Section 2A Championships Saturday, June 2 at Mankato West. Toryn Richards won the 200-meter dash, the high jump and the pole vault at the Sub-Section 6 Champoionships Thursday, May 25. MaeLea Harmon won the 100-meter dash and the long jump. Richards, Harmon, Alexis Morsching, and Shelby Hermel advanced in the 4 x 100-meter relay after placing first at Sub-Sections. Alexia Cates also advanced in the 300-meter low hurdles.
