The WEM girls basketball team had its seven game winning streak snapped Friday, Dec. 21 when undefeated Medford (8-0 overall) edged the Bucs, 48-44 in Medford. These two teams are currently No. 1 and No. 2 in the Gopher Conference. WEM is 4-1 in the conference and 7-1 overall after running their win streak to seven with a 55-40 victory over Le Sueur-Henderson Thursday, Dec. 20. WEM will play in Montgomery Dec. 27 and 28 in the Tri City United Christmas Tournament. The Bucs will play TCU at 6 p.m. on Thursday and will face Norwood-Young America Friday at 10 a.m.

The WEM boys basketball team improved to 6-1 this season with a pair of big wins during the third week in December. The Bucs downed JWP 72-25 Dec. 18 and Medford 78-40 Dec. 21. WEM is 2-1 in the Gopher Conference and will play at Montgomery Thursday, Dec. 27 and 28 in the TCU Christmas Tourney. The WEM girls' basketball team is currently 5-0 this season after opening the season with wins over Faribault BA (73-42), St. Clair (58-51), Maple River (45-35), JWP (60-33), and NRHEG (53-30). The Bucs are tied for the lead in the Gopher Conference with a perfect 3-0 record. Friday, Dec. 14 WEM hosts Hayfield. The WEM boys' basketball team has started the 2018-19 season with three straight wins. They defeated Le Sueur-Henderson (73-61) avenging a loss to the Giants from last year. They also downed Cleveland (85-55) and NRHEG (64-33) in the Gopher Conference opener. The Bucs travel to Hayfield Thursday, Dec. 13, host Norwood-Young America Monday, Dec. 17, and host JWP Tuesday, Dec. 18. Awards have been released by WEM fall sports head coaches. In cross country, junior Tucker Rients and eight grader Addison Peed were named the Most Valuable Runners. In football, junior Brant Melchert was named the team MVP. In volleyball senior MaeLea Harmon was named MVP for the second straight year.

The three fall sports at WEM had tremendous seasons. The football team won the Blue Sub-District Championship. The volleyball team won the Gopher Conference and placed second in the Section 2A Tourney. The WEM/JWP girls cross country team won the Gopher Conference and the boys team placed second.

For the third straight year, Mayer Lutheran has claimed the Section 2A volleyball championship by defeating WEM. The Crusaders, the No. 3 seed in the Section, pulled out a four set win over the Bucs, who finished the season 31-3. Two of those losses were to the Crusaders. Mayer Lutheran advanced to State and was defeated in five sets by Medford in the opening round of the Class A State Tournament Thursday, Nov. 8. The WEM football team, ranked 4th in Class AA, had its season ended Friday, Nov. 2 when No. 10 ranked NRHEG defeated the Bucs, 46-6, at JWP High School. The Panthers avenaged an early season loss of 48-6 to the Bucs as they gained more than 500 yards of total offense. Junior Brant Melchert scored the lone touchdown for the Bucs. The 8th rated Lake Crystal- Wellcome Memorial volleyball team provided an early challenge to the No. 1 rated WEM Buccaneers Thursday, Oct. 25 in Waterville in the South Sub- Section quarterfinals.
But in the end, the better team had little trouble advancing.
WEM opened the Sub-Section Playoffs with a 25-13, 25-8, and 25-10 win over the Knights.
LCWM was competitive in the early portions of the three sets, but were unable to compete with the 29-2 Buccaneers, the No. 2 rated team in Class A.

The WEM/JWP Grizzly girls cross country team placed third in the Section 2A Cross Country Meet Thursday, Oct. 25 at Montgomery Golf Course. This was the best finish in school history for the Grizzlies. Belle Plaine won the championship with 77 poiints. Glencoe-Silver Lake placed second with 107 points. WEM/.JWP finished third with 131 points. Addison Peed and Lauren Dimler finished 10th and 11th overall, missing the State meet by only 10 seconds. The WEM football team, 9-1 overall at rated 4th in Class AA, will face NRHEG, 8-2 overall and rated 9th in Class AA, for the Section 2AA Championship Friday, Nov. 2 at JWP High School in Janesville. WEM defeated St. Clair/Mankato Loyola 35-13 and NRHEG defeated Le Sueur-Henderson 49-0 in the Section 2AA Semifinals played Saturday,. Oct. 27. The Bucs defeated the Panthers 48-6 September 28 in New Richland. The WEM vs. NRHEG winner will face the winner of the Section 1AA Championship game between Caledonia and Chatfiield in the Class AA State Tournament Friday, Nov.

Playoffs for the WEM fall sports teams start next week for the football, volleyball, and cross country teams. The football team defeated Sibley East 61-6 Wednesday, Oct. 17 to claim the No. 1 seed in the Section 2AA Playoffs. WEM will face Blue Earth Area Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in Waterville. The WEM volleyball team won the Gopher Conference Championship after defeating hayfield, NRHEG, and United South Central last week. The Bucs, 28-2 overall, are the No. 1 seed in the Section 2A South Sub-Section. They will host the winner of the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial vs. Madelia match.

The WEM volleyball team is in the middle of a record-setting season. They are currently 25-2 after a nonconference win over Waseca Tuesday, Oct. 9. The Bucs are ranked No. 2 behind Minneota in the Class A State Coaches Poll. WEM will travel to Hayfield Thursday, Oct. 11, host NRHEG Monday, Oct. 15, and travel to USC Tuesday, Oct. 16 to end their regular season. With wins in these three matches, the Bucs will end Faribault BA's reign on top of the Gopher Conference. It has been a 19 year conference championship run for the  Cardinals, who have losses to WEM and Medford this season.

The WEM football team, winners of five straight games, has entered the Class AA Associated Press State Football Rankings. The Bucs are ranked No. 10 in the poll, which was released Thursday, Oct. 11.The top six teams: Caledonia, Minneapolis North, Barnesville, Redwood Walley, St. Charles, and Royalton, are all 6-0. Redwood Valley knocked off the Bucs, 22-18, in the season opener. WEM will face 12th rated Maple River, in a battle of two 5-1 teams Friday, Oct. 12. The Bucs rushed for more than 300 yards in a 21-7 win over Le Sueur-Henderson Oct. 5. For more on the LSH game check out the Oct.

The WEM football team won its 3rd straight game Friday, Sept. 21, shutting out Norwood-Young America 27-0. Wyatt Storch scored a rushing touchdown and returned an interception for a score to lead the Buccaneers. WEM is 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Blue Sub-District, tied for the top spot with NRHEG and Maple River. WEM will play at NRHEG Friday, Sept. 28. This will be the Panther's Homecoming game. The WEM volleyball team placed 3rd in the Class A Minnesopta Showcase Volleyball Tourney which was played Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22 at Burnsville. The Bucs defeated MACCRAY, Lewiston-Altura, and Windom Area in pool play. In the Gold Championship bracket, WEM was defeated by Mayer Lutheran, which was their first loss of the season. In the third place match, the Bucs edged Wabasso. Mayer Lutheran is the two-time defending Class A State Champions and are in the same section as WEM (16-1 overall record). The Bucs will host Blooming Prairie Thursday, Sept.
