Catherine Ann Sery, age 80, of Lakeville formerly of Hastings, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023 at United Hospital in St. Paul. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 26, from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery with Memorial Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 a.m. with Fr. Tom Niehaus officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery.

The Kolacky Days Grand Day Parade entertained thousands with more than 110 units in the parade.
The St. Paul Winter Carnival and many local royalty members from neighboring communities represented themselves through out the parade, including Miss Czech Slovak Minnesota, Belle Plain B-B-Q Days, Miss Waterville, Lonsdale Ambassadors, and more. A little more than a handful of bands made for great musical fun, spread throughout the route. 

Many 1,000's of visitors packed First Street in Montgomery during the 24th Annual Classic Car Show and the Vintage Snowmobile Show during the 89th Annual Kolacky Days Festival on Saturday. 
Whether you are a rat-rod person, an untouched original appreciator, or you liked a good ol' fashioned full restoration, there was something for everyone. Cars lined the street and some side streets from Oak Avenue to Vine Avenue. Vintage snowmobiles lined the rest of the next block north on First Street to Spruce Avenue.

With four big runs in the third inning, Montgomery topped Union Hill, 5-1, Sunday, July 23, avenging an early-season loss in Montgomery.

Nancy Ann Hix, age 89 of Montgomery passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 peacefully and quietly at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 31, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery, with visitation one hour prior.  Private burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Le Sueur at a later date.

Alice Schroeder is named the 89th Annual Kolacky Days Queen. Xiani Medina is named 1st Princess and Miss Congeniality, and Anastasia Stasney, the 89th Annual Kolacky Days button designer, is named 2nd Princess.
Schroeder is the daughter of Eric and Lisa Schroeder, and she sang “For the First Time in Forever” for her talent. Medina is the daughter of Josie Medina, and she did a speech presentation titled “A Journey Home” for her talent. Stasney is the daughter of Dean and Cathy Stasney, and she did a presentation of “The Principles of Taekwondo” for her presentation.

Gerald Francis Kovarik, age 79, of Lonsdale, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.
He is survived by his five children: Julie Kovarik (fiancé Dennis Tikalsky) of Hackensack, Ann Kovarik of Montgomery, Crystal (Richard) Shetka of Faribault, Sarria (Mitch) Green of Hopkins and Christopher Kovarik of St. Paul; five grandchildren: Nikitta (Cole) Mason, Cody Shetka, Brandon Klonne, Oscar and Roy Green, one great-grandson, Waylon Mason; brother Richard (Connie) Kovarik.

Montgomery resident Laura Hennen found the 89th Annual Kolacky Days medallion on the second day of the hunt. Tri-City United Schools introduced a new assistant principal for Montgomery PreK-8 School, Shannon Sheehan.
Sheehan has been a teacher for the last 27 years, specializing in music education, primarily for elementary ages. She has taught middle and high school aged students as well over the years. Most recently, she taught in Hermantown, MN, and she started her teaching career in Mountain Lake, MN.

The Minnesota Twins Youth Baseball Clinic on Thursday, July 13 at TCU’s Montgomery Middle and Elementary School’s outdoor fields was an inspiring event for all.
“We love doing this. This is my passion, what keeps me going,” said Coach Joe Shallenberger from the Twins organization. Coaching is what he said what made him clean.

With a win over crosstown rival New Market Friday night, they set the stage for Sunday’s milestone victory, the 1,100th victory in the coaching career for Elko’s Terry Fredrickson.

He remembers the fear sweeping through his being in 2003 when he heard his wife had cancer. Two years later, Chris Smith heard a doctor direct those same words at him.

When he was 4 years old, Jay Williams introduced his son, Zack, to motocross racing. By the time he was 18, he won an amateur national championship. A year later, he turned professional and began racing for prize money.
He was initially attracted by the speed, the grit and determination of motocross racing. Later, Williams grew to appreciate the individual nature of the sport.
“You put the helmet on and it’s just you and the bike,” he said.

Anya Menk, a 2018 graduate of Tri-City United High School and 2022 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, recently completed her first jazz studio album.

I got a message from an ex-girlfriend on Facebook the other day. We actually talk periodically and sometimes manage to play a game of Ticket to Ride or Codenames online. There is a lot to be said about this person, and many people in my life.
The story involving her that I am thinking of now stems back to one of the regular visits she was on here with me. At the time, she lived in Michigan and I lived in the Fargo-Moorhead area, where I went to college. It was her turn to visit me.
