The second half of the season has been a very good one for the Tri-City United (TCU) girls basketball team.
The Titans are currently riding a three game winning streak and they have won 6 of the past seven games.
TCU picked up a 64-59 win over Lester Prairie Tuesday, Jan. 30. This improved their record to 3-4 in the Minnesota River conference.
Two nights later the Titans had an easy time against Minnesota Valley Lutheran (MVL), downing MVL 65-29 in nonconference action.

The New Prague Fire Department dealt with a fire along Main Street that was more smoke. In a preliminary report around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, firefighters responded to a report of a fire at an apartment at 112 Main Street E.

Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) selects elementary (grades K-5), middle (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9–12) teachers to participate in the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher program.
Founded in 1899, the VFW supports the education of America’s youth. The VFW identifies and recognizes teachers who instill a sense of national pride in students, promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette, and patriotism in their classrooms.    

Dorothy Jean Ruth Pumper-Filipek, age 95, of Le Center, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2024. A private family graveside service was held.

Dorothy Jean Ruth Pumper-Filipek was born October 9, 1928, in Montgomery, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Elmer and Anna (Wondra) Moll. Dorothy was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in her faith as a youth both in Montgomery, Minnesota. She received her education in Montgomery and graduated with the Montgomery High School class of 1946.

Edmund George Dorweiler, age 85, of Montgomery, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2024, at his home. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 20, from 9-11 a.m. with funeral at 11 a.m. all held at the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery. Military honors will be provided by the Montgomery area Honor Guard. Luncheon/refreshments in the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church social hall.

After an early-season setback to the defending state champion, the Trojans’ floor hockey team are continuing to improve their overall game. “Overall, I like where we are at and I feel confident this team can make a push down the stretch to compete for another state tournament berth and hopefully compete for another state title, said coach Jeremy Kalal.
At 5-1, the Trojans travel to East Ridge High School today, Thursday, Feb. 8, to face South Washington County. Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Trojans will host Stillwater at 4:30 p.m. in the New Prague Community Center gym.

After splitting its first two games, the New Prague floor hockey team has enjoyed surge, overwhelming opponents with plenty of offensive and solid defensive play as well.
The Trojans have scored 29 goals in three games. The most recent, a 13-goal effort against Owatonna, is a sign the Trojans’ offense is rounding into form. The win improved the Trojans’ record to 3-1.
New Prague played Chaska/Chanhassen/Shakopee/ Prior Lake co-operative team Tuesday, Jan. 30, after The New Prague Times went to press. Today,Thursday, Feb. 1, New Prague will host South Suburban at 4:30 p.m.

A busy week for the Tri City United (TCU) girls basketball team ended with the Titans winning three of four games.
The Titans defeated Medford, 68-19 Saturday, Jan. 13. They defeated Norwood Young America (NYA), 53-51, Tuesday, Jan. 16. They edged St. James Area 73-70, Thursday, Jan. 18. Mayer Lutheran ended TCU’s winning streak with a 73-66 win Friday, Jan. 19.
In the win over Medford, the Titans led 51-10 at halftime and were never threatened.
Ella Skluzacek scored 21 points in only 15 minutes of action and Ava Flintrop added 14 points and four rebounds.

Tri-City United High School announced its 2024 Snow Week Queen and King senior candidates Monday morning to start off Snow Week, Jan. 29 through Feb. 2.  
Snow Queen candidates are Anastasia Stasney, parents Cathy and Dean Stasney of Montgomery; Liliana Murphy, parents Jen and Andy Murphy of Montgomery; Brynn Fitterer, parents Cheryl and Alan Fitterer of Lonsdale; Xiani Medina, mother Josie Medina of Le Center; Adison Schroer, parents Jaime and Andrew Harmon of Le Center; and Savanah Chapel, parents Alicia Chapel of Inver Grove Heights and Jonathan Chapel of Lonsdale;

Sunday, Jan. 14, was the first time Montgomery’s snow plows had hit the street for snowy weather this 2023-2024 winter season. Last year, at this time, the city had used up its entire budget for snow removal, and salt and sanding.
Public Works Supervisor Nick Filipek said, “So far we have only used 30 hours sanding, 103 tons of salt/sand and 20 hours plowing.” That was as of Jan. 16. In contrast, the city had used up 1,108 hours for snow removal, and salting and sanding, and had used 312 tons of salt/sand by Feb. 1, 2023.

Committee members of the Montgomery Business and Entrepreneur Engagement Committee (MBEEC), a sub-committee of the Economic Development Authority, received a recognition plaque for completion of the Rural Entrepreneur Venture (REV) program by the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation at the Jan. 16 city council meeting.

By the end of last winter, there was a solid two feet of snow in my yard. The ice walls that formed from shoveling my driveway were so formative, that I began reading George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series to seek a suitable comparison
in literature.

Tri-City United High School’s one-act team, performing “How High Is Up?”, is advancing to the section 2A finals in Waseca on Saturday, Feb. 3.
“How High Is Up?” is written by Brendan Murray. It is the story of Little Star’s quest to save her friend’s life by trying to make time stand still instead of allowing seasons to change. Interesting characters come along Little Star’s journey, including meeting The Bird Who Has No Wings and The Magician of the Silent Snows.

The Legion bar was open for drinks and Taco Terco was open for food in the American Legion ballroom Friday night during Tri-City United Montgomery K-6 Parent-Teacher Organization’s second annual Glow-A-Thon.
This event was sponsored by the PTO, and it was a huge success with approximately 150 people attending. PTO President Megan Duffney said, “It’s not so much a fundraiser as an event for the whole family to attend.”

A two-vehicle crash called into Le Sueur County Sheriff’s dispatch at 5:59 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, at the intersection of Le Sueur County Roads 3 and 28 ends in minor injuries.
According to the incident report from the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office, a white 2014 Chevy Silverado traveling westbound on County 28, driven by 20-year-old Addison Hartshorn of New Prague, was struck on the passenger side by a red 2017 Ford Escape, driven by 20-year-old Maxim Lee of New Prague.
