Jake Deutsch made a big defensive play in the bottom of the sixth to stop a Blaine threat, then singled and scored the winning run in the seventh as the New Prague Trojans upset the No. 2 seed Blaine Bengals 7-6 in the quarterfinals of the State Class AAAA baseball tournament Friday, June 14, at CHS Field in St. Paul.
The Trojans scored a run in the second when Cade Pavek scored on a base hit by Sam Novak.

Who will step up to bat for a local family’s little princess?
The third annual Home Run Derby sponsored by Ted Nytes, owner of Nytes Cabinets and Home Town Bats, will be held this Saturday, June 15 at Union Hill ballpark west of New Prague, starting at 5 p.m. The event will benefit a little girl named Aurora and her family, who could use a boost of spirits and funds at this time.

Members of the New Prague High School baseball team got a big sendoff Thursday afternoon, June 13, as they left for the State Class AAAA baseball tournament in St. Paul. A big crowd of fans, including family members and players with the New Prague Youth Baseball Association, cheered them on as they boarded a bus. New Prague is scheduled to face Blaine at 3 p.m. Friday, June 14, at CHS Field in St. Paul in a first-round game.

New Market is now the lone undefeated Class C team in the Dakota-Rice- Scott League, as they won three games during the week, upping their record to 13-0. The Muskies have a 3-1/2 game lead over second-place St. Patrick, which lost their first game of the season to Faribault.
Faribault, Elko and Prior Lake all won two games as well during the past week.

Television news and daily papers have been talking about a series of car break-ins and burglaries that have been occurring late at night in communities around the Twin Cities. One report says that it appears to be an organized burglary ring, with as many as a dozen communities around the Twin Cities seeing a rise in such thefts.

Russell Harry Dietz, 72, of Montgomery, passed away after a long battle with cancer on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, surrounded by family at Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital in Mankato. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery with a funeral service following. Interment will be at a later date.
Russell was born on September 30, 1946, to Harry and Leota (Busta) Dietz. He graduated from Montgomery High School. He was in the US Army Reserves and Montgomery Police Reserves.

She began her career in a small country school in 1949 and taught for just a few years until she married. When her children got older, Anna Mae Witt became a school teacher in New Prague, and is known widely for her dedication, patience and the love so many in the community feel for her. When Praha Village opened its doors to seniors in January, 2019, Anna Mae became one of its earliest residents. Now, she graciously welcomes new residents and neighbors to the community.

A send-off for the New Prague High School baseball team will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at the New Prague High School bus parking lot, on the north side of the building. Those attending are asked to park in the North Student parking lot, directly across from the Skateboard park, to avoid congestion behind the high school, and then gather in the parking lot where the bus will pick up the varsity players. This event is for students, parents, fans and New Prague Youth Baseball players, who are encouraged to wear their Trojan baseball uniform or Trojan gear.

Phyllis (Olund) Johnson, 98, of New Prague died June 11, 2019 at the Mala Strana Residence in New Prague.
She is survived by her son Reid (Cynthia) and grandchildren Brianna (Eric) Fischer, Aaron (Mary-Elizabeth) Johnson, and Lizzy (Alex) Larson, and three great-grandchildren, Maribelle Fischer, Zella Fischer and Winter Larson.

Saint-Amour was among 18 Vikings players and coaches to attend the annual Le Sueur County Sheriff's Mounted Posse’s Take a Kid Fishing Day on Saturday, June 8, at Beaver Dam Resort. There were 75 children ages 8 to 15 that participated, who each got a football that they could have Vikings players sign. The youngsters and Vikings also went out on boats to fish for two hours. The New Prague Trojans will face Blaine in the fist round of the State Class AAAA baseball tournament Friday, June 14, at CHS Field in St. Paul.
Coaches for the eight tournament teams seeded the top five teams Saturday. Stillwater, the defending state champion, received the top seed and Blaine was seeded No. 2. Hopkins is the No. 3 seed, with Mounds View No. 4 and East Ridge No. 5. Three of the seeded teams (Stillwater, Mounds View and East Ridge) are from the Suburban East Conference.

LaVerne N. Coghill, of Jordan (formerly of New Prague) passed away June 6, 2019 at the age of 90.  Mass of Christian Burial is Thursday, June 13, 2019 at 11:00 AM with visitation one-hour prior at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (313 East Second Street) in Jordan.  LaVerne will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Jordan.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced Friday morning that Highway 19 from Highway 169 to Henderson opened to traffic this morning, Friday, June 7 - just in time for the city’s Prince Festival on Saturday.
Highway 93 from 169 to Henderson opened on June 1 leaving both major roadways into Henderson clear for one of the city’s many summer celebrations.

Donna M. Bisek, age 55, of New Prague, died peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2019, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.  Donna was born on February 26, 1964 in Shakopee to Sylvester and Verena (Seurer) Wacker.  She was raised in Savage and graduated from Burnsville High School.  She received an Associate Degree from Normandale Community College in special education. Donna married the love of her life, Frank J. Bisek , on September 2, 1988  at St. John’s Catholic Church in Savage.  The couple made their home in New Prague, where they raised their four children.

The New Prague Area School Board has cancelled its scheduled June 10 workshop meeting due to lack of an agenda. The board’s next regular meeting will be at 6 p.m. Monday, June 24. the main agenda item at that meeting will be adopting a budget for the 2019-20 school year.

New Prague city crews and staff from Vic’s Crane & Heavy Haul Inc., were busy on Monday, June 3, along Columbus Avenue SE. Residents could see the huge crane brought in to lift the old substation transformer out and install a new transformer.
