Most people are aware of the area food shelves and Tri-City United School’s summer meal program for kids 1-18. Even with such programs, Caitlin Huiras thinks there is still much need in this area to help food insecurity.
    Huiras is the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce executive director and quit her job, in part, as a public health program specialist in Carver County to start the nonprofit 507 Food Share in Montgomery. She has a formal education background in nutrition and public health, and her former job focused nutrition with Carver County. 

    Lonsdale Chamber of Commerce’s fourth annual Badges & Bobbers kids fishing event finally had its first good-weather year. The previous few years were plagued with either rain or unpleasant heat. Friday, June 12, though was a mostly sunny and pleasant low-70’s day — the perfect fishing weather.
    The chamber teamed up with Fishing for Life out of Minneapolis, who supplied the kids with the bait, tackle, and other necessary equipment to go fishing with. Kids even got to bring home a free tackle box and pole.

    Two serious crashes this past week left one 59-year-old man dead, and two others with life-threatening injuries. The first crash occurred Sunday morning, June 7, near the Montgomery Trap Range on Highway 21. The second crash occurred the morning of Wednesday, June 10, on Highway 13/21 in front of Tri-City United High School.

    The Minnesota chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society MS 150 bike ride on Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and 14, brought over 2,000 bicycle riders raising money for charity to Le Sueur County and Montgomery.
    After doing the first 75 miles of their ride in a loop in the southwest portion of the county on Saturday and spending a night at camp in St. Peter, riders made their way through Montgomery on their way to Buck Hill in Burnsville on the second 75-mile track. 

    Montgomery Fire Department celebrates its 150th anniversary this Friday and Saturday. 
    Friday already has a full roster for the golf tournament at Montgomery National Golf Course. A shotgun start will ensue at noon, and persons are welcome to come an be spectators for the golfers.
    Saturday the department has planned way more than extra of what their typical dance and beer garden festivities have every year.
    It starts off with a car roll-in from 9-11:30 a.m., where firefighter Sean Benz will perform a set on 1st Street from 10-11:30 a.m.

    Friday’s performances of the junior version of Footloose by Child’s Play Theatre was a fantastic one parents and friends could be proud of.
    The two performances on June 5 were filled with minimalistic set and lighting and it really let the talent the mostly kindergarten through eighth graders in the show shine.
    Grayson Wood, who played Ren McCormack, led the troupes of young adults in their dancing mischief. Cailyn Meadows, who played Ariel Moore — the preacher’s daughter, also tried to lead her posse of girls into the same mischief.

    Le Sueur County took a step to pump the brakes on data centers being built in the county. At the Board of Commissioners meeting on May 26, the county unanimously passed a one-year moratorium on data center construction.
    The moratorium covers unincorporated areas of Le Sueur County. Cities within the county can still make their own decisions.
    “If a city wants to have a data center, we don’t have any control over that at all,” Commissioner David Preisler said. “If they want to, they’re not affected by this ordinance. They’ve got their own planning and zoning.”

    The filing period to run for office in the 2026 mid-term elections with the Minnesota Secretary of State closed Tuesday, June 2, at 5 p.m. Most seats open for election on the county commissioner races, and state races showing up with both a democratic and republican candidates on the ballot.

    Tri-City United FFA Area Alumni’s 8th Annual Truck & Tractor Pull at the Le Sueur County Fairgrounds in Le Center had a bit of a hiccup last Friday evening.
    Brian Ceplecha, one of the pull’s committee members, said, “Despite a nearly three-hour delay due to the pulling sled having multiple flat tires on it way up from central Iowa, we got underway at 9:15 p.m. and successfully concluded the event at 2:30 a.m.!

    The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s MS 150 Minnesota 2026 event comes home once again after its inaugural ride through Montgomery in 1980, some 46 years later.
    For many years, the Minnesota chapter’s two-day, 150 mile bicycle-riding fundraising event had been running from Duluth to Hinkley and then White Bear Lake. 

    A serious head-on crash on Highway 13/21 in front of Tri-City United High School in Montgomery on Wednesday morning, June 10, caused severe injuries to at least one person.
    The crash left the motorists detouring around the area for a couple of hours and traffic was reduced to a single lane for a while thereafter as the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) marked and investigated the incident.

    David Johnston, 59, of Montgomery, was fatally injured during a two-vehicle crash the morning of Sunday, June 7.
    According to the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) incident report, a 2020 Buick Enclave SUV, driven by Megan Holicky of Le Center, was traveling northbound on Le Sueur County 3 on the south side of Montgomery, and Johnston was traveling eastbound on Highway 21, riding on a 2024 Harley Davidson motorcycle, when the two vehicles collided at the intersection of the two roads near Seneca and the Montgomery trap range.

    Seneca held a 100th year anniversary celebration of the canning facility last Wednesday, May 27, which was originally opened in 1926 as Minnesota Valley Canning Company.
    On display was a pair of harvesters and a pup wagon they currently use for corn and pea harvest, a couple of five foot tall replica cans of sweet corn and peas, and a long display of memorabilia of the plant’s history by Duane Jindra.

    Tri-City United High School graduate Jules Rotter received one of three Robert E. Meeks $3,000 scholarships from the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) at the Tuesday, May 26, school board meeting.
    Jocelyn Brown, of Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, and Obioma Osuji, of Prior Lake, were the other two recipients of this scholarship. 

    Tri-City United High School track team members set a record at the Minnesota State High School League’s Class AA State Track and Field Tournament today at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
    The 4x200 meter relay team of Jillian Houn, Carly Hartwig, Cami Hartwig, and Kaitlyn Hartwig ran a 1:37.90, beating the previous Class AA record was 1:39.43 — set by a Monticello team in 2024. They are the 2026 state champs.

    A total of seven Tri-City United (TCU) track and field athletes have advanced to the Class AA State Meet, which will be held Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
    Advancing are juniors Corday Freeman and Kaitlyn Hartwig, sophomores Jillian Houn, Eric Borchardt, and Carly Hartwig, freshman Nyadak Ruei, and eighth grader Cami Hartwig.
