The veterans' gun salutes during North Morristown's 10 a.m. Fourth of July parade echoed thunder, Wednesday morning, as parade goers and parade participants braved gray skies and showers. The rain quit after about an hour and the celebration in full swing.
Ninety-six kids reeled in 122 fish during Elysian's Fourth of July kids' fishing contest on Saturday, June 30. The contest was held at the city beach along the shore of Lake Francis. Tristan Anderson, 12, of Eagle Lake caught the largest fish of the day, a 12'-3/4" bass.

A teenager drowned in Lake Elysian during the afteroon of June 29.
According to the Waseca County Sheriff's report, the victim was a 17-year-old male who reportedly jumped in the lake and never resurfaced around 4 p.m. Elysian Fire Chief Jason James said the incident occurred just south of Kaupon's Point.
The 2018 Elysian Princess of the Lakes was crowned Thursday, June 28 in Elysian as part of the 4th of July Celebration. Shelby Clinton, daughter of Beth and Matt Clinton, was named the Princess of the Lakes. Her attendants are Evelyn Miller, daughter of Brandis and John Miller and Lydia Coulsey, daughter of Becky Coulsey and Matt Coulsey. This was the 30th Princess of the Lakes pageant in Elysian. velma, Leona Morris, age 80 of Waseca, died at the Pleasant Manor Nursing home in Faribault on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. Born in Le Sueur County on August 23, 1937, Velma was the daughter of Donald and Florence (Brown) Bluhm. She attended school in Waterville. On June 9, 1954 she married Glen C.
A total of six baseball players and five softball players earned All-Gopher Conference honors this past spring. The honorees on the baseball team include First Team selections seniors Will Storch and Michael Ungs and juniors Bladyn Bartelt and Jayson Schneider. Senior Adam Rients and sophomore Grant McBroom were named to the Honorable Mention Team. Earning First Team honors for Buccaneer softball team were seniors Nicole Nuetzman and Hailie Tegmeier, sophomore Trista Hering, and freshman Brielle Bartelt. Senior Madeline Meskan was named to the Honorable Mention Team.
The congregation of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Elysian will celebrate the retirement of the mortgage on their new church on Sunday, June 24. The building, which was completed in 2007, is the third church for the parish. The festivities will begin with a noon Mass followed by a chicken dinner and the mortgage burning ceremony. Betty Jane Taylor, age 88 of Elysian died on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. Born on July 6, 1929 in Elysian, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Fred and Olga (Linnum) Siefert. She attended school in rural Elysian before graduating from Waterville High School. She married Earle Taylor on May 21, 1949 at the Elysian Methodist Church. Betty Jane worked primarily as a homemaker, later working as an aide at the Waterville Good Samaritan Center. She enjoyed gardening, baking, traveling, going to garage sales, singing, bible studies, and spending time wit
Brian Richard Lueck, age 46 of Elysian passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018 surrounded by his family. Born on September 20, 1971 in Mankato, Minnesota, Brian was the son of Richard and Audrey (Weigt) Lueck. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mankato. Brian graduated from Immanuel Lutheran High School and went on to earn various degrees at Minnesota State University-Mankato in Engineering and Computer Information Systems. Brian worked at the MN Dept. of Transportation in Mankato as the Soils Auger Crew Chief. Brian married Jolene Schnoor on November 3, 2001.

Funeral services will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, North Morristown on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at 10 a.m. with the Reverend Juan Palm, officiating. Interment and military rites will be at Concordia Cemetery, North Morristown. Visitation will be at Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 from 3 to 7 p.m. and also at the church for one hour prior to the services. The first day of the Class A State Track and Field Meet at Hamline University provided some mixed results for the 10 WEM athletes competing. Junior MaeLea Harmon advanced into Saturday's 100-meter final with the second best preliminary time of 11.99, her best time ever. The 4 x 100-meter relay team (Harmon, Alexia Morsching, Shelby Hermel, and Toryn Richards) also advanced to Saturday's final with the third best time of 50.22.
Alyssa Schwartz, daughter of Jeremy and Susan Schwartz, was crowned the 2018 Miss Waterville Friday, June 8. Her attendants are Morgan Nusbaum, daughter of Dave and Tammy Nusbaum, Hannah Petry, daughter of Todd and Amy Petry, and Kayleen Stangler, daughter of Jeff and Sue Stangler. Alyssa Schwartz also was named Miss Congeniality and Hannah Petry received the Talent Award for her gymnastics routine. Skylah Bahmer, daughter of Joseph and April Kalsheurer, was named Junior Miss.
The 54th annual Waterville Bullhead Days celebration starts Friday, June 8 and runs through Sunday, June 10. Friday events include the Medallion Hunt, a Karaoke Contest, the 62nd annual Miss Waterville Pageant, and a Fireworks Display. Saturday there will be a Softball Tourney, Kids Fishing Contest, NAPA Remote Control Car Demolition Derby, Bean Bag Tourney, and Pedal Tractor Pull, and a Karaoke Contest. Taxpayers will be picking up the bill for the clean up of approximately 20 tons of construction waste that was dumped in a Waterville Township ditch on Tuesday, June 5 or Wednesday, June 6.
According to Waterville Township Chairman Alan Gehrke, the mess was discovered along 470th Street on Wednesday morning and was then reported to the township and Le Sueur County Sheriff's Office. The ditch is located north of Waterville and west of Highway 13.
