The story about the Waterville Indians amateur baseball team advancing to the 2022 Class C State Tournament could be written almost exactly the same this year.
The Indians did it the hard way, but in the end it really doesn’t matter how it was accomplished. The Waterville Indians won two straight elimination games Saturday, Aug. 12 to punch their ticket to the 2023 Class C State Tournament.
The Indians defeated Gaylord, 16-6, in seven innings and ended Belle Plaine’s season for the second straight year, recording an 8-0 shutout in the Region 6C 3rd place game Saturday at ISG Field in Mankato.
Jordan received the No. 1 seed out of Region 6C after downing Blue Earth in the Championship game Saturday.
Waterville will be making its 11th State Tournament appearance. They played last year in Faribault and lost in the opening round to Loretto.
In 2019 the Indians finished 33-3 overall and tied for 5th, which was their best finish in team history.
The Indians will open Class C State Tourney action Sunday, August 20 at 1:30 p.m. in Delano against Region 2C runner-up New Ulm Brewers. New Ulm was the No. 1 seed in their Region and they were upset in the championship game by Courtland, a team Waterville defeated earlier this season.
