Despite a season-best rushing performance, the WEM football team dropped its sixth game of the season, losing 48-0 to St. Clair/Mankato Loyola Wednesday, Oct. 18.
The Bucs gained 111 rushing yards on 38 carries against a very good Cyclone defense.
“Disappointed in the discrepancy in score but we never quit and I'm proud of that culture,” head coach Sam Stier said. “Now it's a matter of executing early and often”
St. Clair/Loyola opened up a 34-0 halftime lead behind an outstanding performance by quarterback Dylan Blount.
Blount completed 13-of17 passes for 187 yards and four touchdowns. He rushed for another 93 yards and two touchdowns. Austin Ward, nephew of Tom and Tracy McBroom of Elysian, scored one of the receiving touchdowns.
“St. Clair came out and ran the ball down the field on their first drive. We responded with a couple of first downs but ultimately couldn't change field position too much. A fumble to stall out that drive led to them hitting a deep shot over the middle that resulted in being down 14-0,” Stier said “We then tried to keep the ball on the ground and try to limit their scoring opportunities, but fumbles and a good St. Clair defense left us down 34-0 at halftime.”
