Judge hears testimony on plan; PUC will decide route this spring
Great River Energy’s proposed reroute of an electric power line has residents along Baseline Avenue and Highway 19 angry and frustrated the company selected a route they claim will negatively impact their homes and businesses.
New Prague High School’s one-act play troupe won the subsection championship for the fifth straight year Saturday, Jan. 27, during competition in the high school’s auditorium. New Prague won with the comedy “Middle School Dating Game” by Jennifer McVetty.
Director Allie Meyer said New Prague moves on to compete at the Section 2AA finals at Minnetonka Saturday, Feb. 3. If the New Prague troupe wins Feb. 3, it advances to the state competition Thursday and Friday, Feb. 8 and 9, at O’Shoughnessy Auditorium at St. Catherine University in St. Paul.
Shelby (Giesen) Hartman was disappointed when she heard Mayo Health System New Prague had decided to stop providing labor and delivery services for the community. To her, it’s sad the community hospital will no longer be a place where local moms and dads can go to deliver their newborns.
A two-vehicle crash called into Le Sueur County Sheriff’s dispatch at 5:59 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, at the intersection of Le Sueur County Roads 3 and 28 ends in minor injuries.
According to the incident report from the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office, a white 2014 Chevy Silverado traveling westbound on County 28, driven by 20-year-old Addison Hartshorn of New Prague, was struck on the passenger side by a red 2017 Ford Escape, driven by 20-year-old Maxim Lee of New Prague.
With the ticking on the end of a lease the United States Postal Service holds on the New Prague Post Office, city leaders are concerned there has seemingly been no progress to address the future of an aging facility with a history of problems in a community interested in growth.

Dan Michel, better known as Mitch Paradise on the pro wrestling circle, has had a life-long passion for pro wrestling, and he’s spent the better part of more than 25 years doing it himself.
“Back when we only had just four or five channels, on Sunday mornings after church, we would watch wrestling. We were glued to the TV when Jerry Blackwell and The High Flyers would come on, and then Hulk Hogan came around,” Michel said.
The New Prague Fire Department says it received a call for a pole shed on fire at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23. Upon arrival on scene at 29394 201st Ave., approximately one mile south of Union Hill, the department said the shed was fully engulfed.
Working for post office was just the right job for Karger
She delivered mail for the last time on a cold Saturday afternoon. She said goodbyes to coworkers, nearly all among her good friends. After 25-plus years on the job, Kelly Karger isn’t a fan of saying goodbye.
New Prague area residents will have three chances to see New Prague High School’s one-act play, “Middle School Dating Game,” all at the high school auditorium. The first performance is Saturday, Jan. 20, then Friday, Jan. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 27. The performances are free and open to the public.
Elvin Leigh Wehking, age 57, of rural Janesville, died in a single vehicle crash on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
The Le Sueur County Sheriff’s dispatch center received a 911 call at 5:33 p.m. of a vehicle crash near a residence on Tetonka Lake Road in Elysian Township. Le Sueur County Sheriff’s deputies and Elysian Fire and Rescue were initially dispatched to the scene.
Sheriff’s deputies noted that a 2003 Ford Taurus, driven by Wehking, had left the roadway, travelled through a ditch and collided with a large tree — which caused extensive front end damage to the vehicle.
Andrew Thom stresses he is joking when he says he was hoping his daughter would arrive in time for he and his wife, Nicole, to receive a tax credit for having a child in 2023.
But Nicole and Andrew were delighted when their daughter, Louella Ann, arrived in time to become the first baby of 2024 in The New Prague Times’ New Year’s Baby 2024 contest.
Louella Ann arrived Monday, Jan. 1, 8:10 p.m. Born at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, she arrived weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces. Louella arrived at 21 1/2 inches long. Louella Ann is the couple’s first child.
On Saturday, Dec. 30, descendants of Francis Atherton Bean Sr. and Jr. were in New Prague to meet with the current and future owner of the Bean Mansion at 211 Second St. NW, which has been a home for many families.
More than 150 people, mostly children with their families, celebrated the new year early with a ball drop at noon during the second annual Noon Year’s Eve Ball Drop Sunday, Dec. 31, at Eagle View Elementary School in Elko New Market.
“It seemed like a bigger crowd than last year,” said Pastor Gordon Deuel of Crossroads Church, which hosted the event. “We had a good crew of volunteers and something fur for all ages.”
The American Legion in Montgomery has had a banner out front for a few weeks now advertising a new restaurant coming called Taco Terco. It is a partnership between the Legion and Taco Terco’s owners, Chef Daniel Garza and his wife Cara Sutton. The restaurant is set to open in the first part of January 2024.
Diana Turek, age 65 of Montgomery, was found deceased in her vehicle in front of Edel’s Meat Market at 116 1st Street North in Montgomery Thursday, Dec. 21.
A female customer arriving at the meat market noticed Turek in the vehicle and knocked on the window but got no response. She made a call to 911 at about 3:22 p.m.
Montgomery Police Officer Sladek was dispatched, arrived on scene and advised dispatch to send Montgomery Area EMS. Officer Sladek found Turek in her vehicle. He checked for vital signs and advised dispatch to cancel EMS as she was deceased.
