New Prague resident Phyllis Smith has been selected the Outstanding Senior Citizen in Le Sueur County.
Smith will be recognized at the Le Sueur County Fair during the Senior Citizens/Farm Family of the Year Program on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 1 p.m.
The individual that nominated Smith said this about the former elementary school secretary:
“Phyllis is an exceptional senior citizen, actively contributing to her community through various roles. She is a dedicated member of the quilt club and played a significant part in the 4-H Federation for many years, supporting her children's journey through the Le Sueur County 4-H program. Her involvement extends beyond these activities, showcasing her commitment to making a positive impact in numerous extracurricular pursuits.
Phyllis was an active adult leader for Le Sueur County 4-H in the late 1970s to the early 1990s. She was a project leader, Federation Adult Advisor and Club Leader. She was active within their church by helping with Sunday School, Bible Studies and other events as they arose. Most recently, she has been active in the community Quilt Club volunteering at their open houses and participating in their meetings.
The Smiths have always been supporters of youth activities. They always sponsored Le Sueur County Beef Showmanship awards, and currently are recognizing the Le Sueur County Premier Showman with a plaque which hangs in the 4-H Family Center. Phyllis continues to support Le Sueur County 4-H by attending the Ribbon Auction. They also supported the Minnesota Limousin Association and Minnesota Junior Limousin Association by sponsoring classes, awards and leased multiple heifers to youth in the area who have become great cattlemen and cattlewomen today.”
To be chosen, nominees must be 65-years-of-age or older and they will be judged on their volunteer activities, which can be prior to them reaching 65 years of age.
