Tri-City United High School Principal Alan Fitterer announced his retirement at January’s with a letter to the board and superintendent. The principal has spent the last 20 years with the district, starting in 2006 when it was Montgomery-Lonsdale High School.
    Fitterer graduated from Mankato East High School in 1985, where he participated in football (wide receiver/tight end), basketball (captain), baseball (centerfielder), student council (president), and National Honor Society, and was a class officer and took part in the Minnesota Male Teen Competition.

    Although the regular season didn’t progress as seamlessly as planned, New Prague’s cooperative indoor softball team won a berth in the state tournament Wednesday, May 6, with a big win over Anoka in the league playoffs.

    The Tri-City United softball team won three of their four games last week, all against Big South Conference opponents.
    They opened the week on Monday, May 4 with an 8-7 loss to Fairmont. The following afternoon the Titans defeated Waseca, 11-1, in five innings. The week ended with TCU sweeping a doubleheader from Marshall, winning 9-8 in eight innings in the first game and 10-8 in the second game.
    TCU improved to 8-5 overall with the three straight wins and are now 6-5 in the conference (4th place overall).

    The Tri-City United Schools $39.99 million proposed capital bond that was put up for a special election on Tuesday, May 12, was again rejected by the voters in the district. 
    Slightly more voters showed up for this election, voting 1,055 (48.5%) in support of the bond and 1,120 (51.5%) not in support of the bond.

    Tri-City United School’s middle school team, Circuit Surfers (3589F), placed 332nd in the world at the Vex V5 World Robotics Tournament April 25-27 at the America’s Center Convention Complex in downtown St. Louis, Mo.
    The team headed south on Friday, April 24 in school vans to compete with teams from 38 different nations across world in this year’s challenge — Push Back. The Circuit Surfers even decked out their booth on location with beach/surf decorations, as well as wearing tropical themed attire for the grand occasion.

    Tri-City United High School and TCU Montgomery School grades 5-8 choir director John Sosa’s contract was not renewed for next school year, terminating his employment as at the end of this school year.

    The Tri-City United (TCU) boys track and field team had some great individual performances during a pair of meets last week.
    Sophomore Eric Borchardt set a new school record in the 200-meter dash Thursday, April 30 in Montgomery. The Titan sprinter placed third in the race with a new record time of 22.84. He broke the previous record set in 2016 by Eric McCrady.

    It was a very good week for the Tri-City United (TCU) girls track and field teams last week.
    They started the week with a second place finish Tuesday, April 28 at New Ulm. The Titans scored 143 points to finish behind champion Minnesota Valley Lutheran (167). Two days later TCU hosted their second meet of the season and finished with 185 points, placing second to Providence Academy (202.5).

    Tri-City United High School had 30 students, seven teams and two individuals, that participated in Minnesota’s 97th Annual State FFA Convention April 20-21 on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus. 
    Members participated in hearing speakers, competitions, workshops, leadership sessions, and an awards ceremony with over 6,000 other FFA members from around the state with the convention’s theme being “Believe.”

This year’s Tri-City United prom theme, “Rock Thru the Ages,” was a hit with one of the staff bringing in a motorcycle as one of the grand march photo stations in the gymnasium. Participants gathered at the Revival on Main for formal pictures first, headed to a packed gymnasium at the high school for the grand march, and then were whisked away via bus to the Science Museum of Minnesota for prom dinner and dance. The students then packed buses at 10:30 p.m. to go to Bowlero in Lakeville for post prom, and finally boarded buses back to the high school at 3 a.m.

    Tri-City United High School’s FFA students once again showed their pride in agriculture through another “Drive Your Tractor to School Day.”
    FFA students gathered early on Thursday, April 16, on the south end of Montgomery for a light breakfast and for each other to gaze over the other’s tractor — or in the case of one individual, a road grader.

    The Tri-City United (TCU) baseball team showcased its strong potential and grit this week, moving to 4-2 on the season with back-to-back victories over Waseca and Sibley East. Behind a masterful one-hit shutout and a power surge that included a key home run, the Titans' depth was on full display as the pitching staff kept opposing bats at bay while the offense may have found its stride.

    Thespians depicting roles of various fairytales were thrown into the pit this past weekend in Tri-City United High School’s spring play, “Dragon’s Lair.”
    Four “Dragons,” representative of  the Sharks on the popular television show “Shark Tank,” decided the fate of various fairytale characters and their ideas and products related to make them money. Those who didn’t make the cut were thrown into a pit with the Dragon.

    A doubleheader sweep of Worthington Saturday, April 11 helped the Tri-City United (TCU) softball team finish the opening week of the season with a 3-2 record.
    The Titans defeated Worthington 13-3 in six innings and 25-5 in five innings. They also opened the season with an 11-1, six inning win over Blooming Prairie March 30.
    In between the wins, the Titans were defeated by St. Peter, 11-8, April 7 and 8-1 by Belle Plaine April 9.

    Tri-City United High School’s speech team had a good showing at the Section 1A speech finals in Byron last Friday. Four of the six section finalists will be moving onto the state speech tournament on April 25 at Park Center High School in Brooklyn Park.

    Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC), which serves much of our readership area, held its annual meeting at Jordan High School on Tuesday, April 7, where over 200 members gathered.
    A total of 20 $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors were given out or a total of $30,000. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have a parent or legal guardian who are MVEC members, be enrolled to attend an accredited post-secondary institution as a full-time student, and have at minimum GPA of 2.0.
