Selma R. Bohnsack, 91

Selma R. Bohnsack, age 91, of Cokato, formerly of New Prague, died peacefully  on Monday, April 30, 2018, at Cokato Manor Nursing Home.  Selma was born on September 14, 1926, in Lanesburgh Township, Le Sueur County to Fred August and Sophie M. (Ruehling) Jahn.  She attended the Le Sueur County district school and graduated at age 16 from New Prague High School.  She started work at the canning factory but was soon recruited by the State Bank of New Prague.  Eventually, she went to Mahowald Motors, where she served as their bookkeeper/accountant for many years.  Selma married Reuben W. Bohnsack on May 19,1946 at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church and was actively engaged in farming with her husband.  She remained active even into her 80’s, driving tractor for her son, Neil’s, family sweet corn business.  In her early years, she raised broiler chickens, butchered, and hand-delivered them to the New Prague Hotel every Saturday night for their Sunday menu.  She remained a phenomenal gardener throughout her life and could get flowers to grow where no one else could.   She loved music and was a self-taught keyboard player.  Selma was an excellent cook but her shining achievement was in her quilting ability; she had an eye for color and was meticulous in stitching.  Selma’s legacy was in her care and kindness to others, always putting her family and others before her own needs.

Selma is survived by sons, Neil (Susan) Bohnsack of New Prague, Bruce (Susan) Bohnsack of Cokato; sister, Goldie Novak of Edina; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Reuben on January 27, 1992; great-grandson, Blake Reuben Bohnsack; grandson, Matthew Menden; parents; sister, Gladys Kodadek; brothers-in-law, John Kodadek & Ed Novak.

A memorial funeral service will be held on Friday, May 4, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church (28933 181st Ave., New Prague) with Reverend Henry Koch officiating.  Visitation will take place 1 hour prior to service starting at 10:00 AM at church.  Burial will take place in the church cemetery followed by lunch in the church social hall.  bruzekfuneralhome.com
