NP boys earn big win over Farmington, fall hard to BSM

An audible sigh of relief from the New Prague boys’ ice hockey team was just what the doctor ordered as the Trojans won a big game against a section opponent last week.

But New Prague, 7-9-2 overall, endured a hard return to reality two days later with a tough loss to Benilde-St. Margaret’s, the Trojans’ second loss to the private school powerhouses this year.

New Prague will be back to conference play tonight, Thursday. Jan. 30, 7 p.m., in Chaska against the Hawks. Last month, the two teams played through three scoreless regulation periods and an overtime period of bonus hockey in New Prague. Both teams badly need a win. New Prague entered this week at 3-7-1 since the 0-0 draw with Chaska. The Hawks entered the week at 1-7 since the draw. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 7:15 p.m., Lakeville North comes to New Prague.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s 9, Trojans 2 The host Red Knights blew New Prague away Saturday, Jan. 25, in St. Louis Park. Benilde-St. Margaret’s scored five times in the opening period and added another four goals in the second before the Trojans spoiled the shutout.

New Prague’s Grayson Witty and Connor Williams scored their team’s goals. Williams with a minute left in the second period and a Red Knights’ player in the sin bin. Walker Andersen and Carson Ashley assisted on Williams’ eighth goal of the season.

BSM scored 28 seconds into the contest. New Prague did itself no favors in the game. The Trojans took nine penalties. Three of the Red Knights’ goals came with a man advantage.

Trojans 3, Farmington 1 A big win Thursday, Jan. 23, ended a 1-6-1 skid and gave the Trojans hope of a home section playoff game, possibly against the Tigers depending on how the rest of the regular season games go for New Prague.
