Firefighter Drew Koloc is in his 10th year as drill master

Drill team gets high marks for precision

If he were a teacher and the members of the New Prague Fire Department’s drill team the students, Drew Koloc would have been handling out high marks Saturday at the Park Ballroom.

Koloc, the team’s drill master, was especially proud of the team’s performance Saturday evening at the annual New Prague Fire Department Dance & Drill. The event was attended by a few hundred New Prague and area residents. The event is an annual tradition the department’s members offer to the community. It is an opportunity for former New Prague firefighters and firefighters from neighboring communities to attend and socialize.

A 14-year member of the department, Koloc has been the drill team’s drill master for 10 years. The team gathers at the Park Ballroom three Tuesday evenings and the final Friday, April 4, before the drill & dance to practice. The team showed their practice was worthwhile in its presentation.

“They did great. They were awesome,” Koloc said. “These guys are good.”

As drill master, Koloc decides the pattern the drill team uses. The team’s 16 members used a similar drill formation as they did a year ago. The team’s 16 members average about six years per person on the team, although longtime member Mark Novak’s 22 years skews the numbers a bit.
