Catherine M. Simek, 63

Catherine M. Simek, age 63, of New Prague, died peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, November 13, 2023, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.  Cathy was born on April 23, 1960, in New Prague to Lawrence and Gladys (David) Simek.  She attended St. Wenceslaus Parochial School and graduated from New Prague High School. Cathy began her career as a nursing assistant at Mala Strana Nursing Home then worked as a clerk at Kmart for over 10 years before returning to Mala Strana Assisted Living where she was currently working in the housekeeping department.

Cathy always had a smile on her face and was never happier than when she was surrounded by  her animals and with her friends and family.  She was the most reliable person one could ever meet and the first to volunteer to house sit for the pet that would be left at home. She looked forward to the monthly dinners out with her friends.  Cathy enjoyed sports and in her younger years, she participated in league bowling.  She was very specific, however, in the sports she chose to follow on TV with her favorite teams being college football, baseball, and hockey teams especially from Notre Dame, USC, and UCLA.  She loved jigsaw puzzles and word finds.  Cathy’s smile was infectious and the kindness that she exuded was evident in her eyes.  One knew that here was a woman who thought only the best of whomever she met and called friend.  

 Cathy is survived by her siblings, Anthony (Mary) Simek of New Prague, Patty Shankey (Scott Andrus) of Elko New Market, James Simek of New Prague, Mark Simek of New Prague; nephew, Michael (Alex) Shankey; niece, Megan Shankey; great-niece, Ophelia.  She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bernard Simek.

 Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Eugene Theisen officiating.  Visitation will take place at church from 9-10 AM.  Burial will occur at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery followed by lunch at the Legion Clubroom.
