A former school board member from another community and a previous candidate for the New Prague School Board who came up short in 2022 and two others are seeking the appointment to an open school board seat share a common belief and commitment to students and their education.
The quartet will be individually interviewed by the school board Monday, Feb. 12, 5 p.m. The board will have a series of questions for each of the candidates. To maintain a smooth and timely process, the board previously decided the public will not be allowed to ask questions.
After the last of the interviews, the board will discuss publicly which of the candidates it favors. The board will indicate which of the candidates it intends to appoint to the final year of Jeanne Kubes’ term. Kubes resigned her seat on the board last month. A special meeting will be called for the formal decision on the selected candidate. The selected candidate will spend a month participating in the board process and discussions without a vote until being sworn-in at the March meeting.
The candidates for appointment are Ann Christy and Bob Cunniff of New Prague, Melissa Horejsi of Webster and Jean Schmidt of Elko New Market. All four of the candidates indicated at least a willingness to seek the position in next fall’s election. Because there is no primary election, candidates will need to commit to the election in the summer.
