New Prague floor hockey team off to 2-0 start

Recognizing it will face more challenging opponents in the weeks to come, the New Prague floor hockey team has enjoyed victory in its first two games this season.

The Trojans topped Owatonna, 11-1, Thursday, Jan. 23. The victory came after a season-opening win over Mankato Jan. 14. Tuesday, Jan. 28, after the newspaper left for press, NP hosted the co-op team from Chanhassen/Chaska/ Shakopee/Prior Lake. Today, Thursday, Jan. 30, 4:30 p.m., the Trojans head to Bloomington Jefferson Activity Center to face South Suburban. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 4:30 p.m., South Washington County comes to New Prague.

“We are still working on our conditioning and some of our placement on the floor. Our schedule gets a lot tougher here in the next few weeks and we will really get a good look at where we sit among the top teams after the next four, five games,” said NP coach Jeremy Kalal.

The Trojans have three games in February against state powerhouse teams, the defending state champions from Burnsville-Farmington-Lakeville Tuesday, Feb. 11, 4:30 p.m., at McGuire Middle School in Lakeville, Thursday, Feb. 13, 4:30 p.m., at Stillwater High School and Wednesday, Feb. 19, 4:30 p.m., when Dakota United comes to New Prague.

Trojans 11, Owatonna 1 New Prague bolted out of the gate fast and never looked back against the Huskies. The Trojans held a 6-0 lead after one period.

The two games each scored a goal in the second period. The Trojans added four more goals in the third period, scoring allowing the team to empty the bench and afford reserves plenty of playing time.

“We were able to play a lot of different players in different positions and try some new things,” Kalal said. “We were able to try different kids at different positions, trying different setups of where players are going on certain plays.”

New Prague’s Carter Tupy paced the Trojans with four goals. Elliot Soukup scored twice and added an assist. Brock Kocina scored twice. Nikkos Patrin and Josh Anderson and Aidan Voss all scored for NP. Patrin, Dayle Carroll, Lorelai Hamre and Landon Malecha added assists in the win.

“We started out strong and got a lead early which allowed us to get a lot of playing time for all of our players,” Kalal said. “Our starters did a nice job of setting the tone and getting us out to a good lead so we could relax a little and work on some things.”
