Marcella Margaret Thorsen, 99

Marcella Margaret Thorsen, 99 years young, entered her heavenly home on May 22, 2021. She lived her life on her terms including staying in her home for her entire adult life.

Marcella was born in rural Kilkenny, MN on November 3, 1921, to Edward and Eda (Kuntz) Schwartz. In her youth Marcy attended District 24 Country School and graduated from Montgomery High School - Class of 1937. After graduation she attended Teacher Training in Le Center and Mankato, and taught at a rural school for one year. Marcy’s career veered when she was offered an office position at Minnesota Valley Canning Company in 1942. As the company changed to Green Giant and later Pillsbury, she was deftly able to adjust in management and technology changes — she entered the era of computers with ease.

In 1949 Marcella met the love of her life, Lloyd Thorsen, when they both worked at Green Giant. Lloyd swept her off her feet and they married on May 13, 1950. They celebrated 58 years of marriage before Lloyd died on December 6, 2008, after a courageous 10-year battle with cancer.

Marcy and Lloyd retired together from Pillsbury in 1985. They traveled to many different cities and had numerous adventures across the United States and Mexico. She enjoyed cut-work embroidery, playing bridge, gardening, canning and spending time with family.

Marcy was reborn with the birth of Dakota and Cailyn Meadows in 2008 and 2011. Her patience blossomed, her attitude relaxed and her sense of humor grew with each passing year. On family Sundays, she loved playing cards and RummiKub, which she ruled. Her famous “Marcy’s Jell-O” will live on as Dakota learned and Cailyn will soon learn how to make it.

Marcella is survived by nephews, Gary Petree, Dale (Sue) Dietz and Bruce (Allison) Dietz; plus niece Renee Crosby Southworth. Very special to her heart were Dakota and Cailyn Meadows, her great-great nieces; and they truly adored their Auntie Marcy. Survivors also include grandniece Claire Crosby-Meadows and handyman and one-to-call-on Dustin Meadows. Also great-niece Sabrina Southworth, in-laws Jackie (Milo) Eucker and Elton “Al” (Donna) Thorsen plus many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death was her beloved husband, Lloyd; her parents; her sisters Lucille (August “Augie”) Dietz and Rita (Lehman) Petree; in-laws Carl and Esther Thorsen, Warren “Shorty” (Dorothy) Thorsen, Lois (LeRoy) Hoppe, and Beverly (Jack) Richter.

A special thank you to Golden Heart Senior Care and Moments Hospice for their wonderful and loving care of Marcella throughout her last journey.

Services were held on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Tom Niehaus officiating the celebration of Marcella’s life.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. The memorials will be used to help create a nature and science program, involving the Ney Nature Center, for the students at Dakota and Cailyn’s school - Holy Redeemer School.
