Police Week: A Message from the Montgomery Police Department Chief of Police

Thomas Stonehouse of the Minnesota Pipes and Drums band plays “Amazing Grace” on his bagpipe at midnight on Monday, May 15 in front of the Montgomery Police Department to commemorate the beginning of National Police Week and fallen officers. This is the fourth year this solemn tradition has been held in Montgomery. Even though it is specifically for police officers, Stonehouse, a volunteer emergency medical responder with Montgomery Area Emergency Medical Service, says that the event represents all emergency personnel. Police, fire and ambulance showed up with lights on to block the street as a small crowd gathered in remembrance for the occasion.

Greetings from the Montgomery Police Department (MPD). The 2022 and the beginning of 2023 have been a busy time for the MPD. We had a difficult time with the loss of Officer Gordy Prochaska in January. Gordy worked for the MPD in a part-time capacity for 33 years. His laugh and presence will be missed by our agency and the community.

We have also been busy with input on the construction process of the new police facility. We are excited to move all police operations to the new building in June. It is my hope to host an “open house” prior to moving in, to give the public a chance to walk through the building and ask questions.

Over the past year, we have welcomed two new full-time officers to the staff of the MPD. Officer Logan Cummins and Officer Kyle Sladek are great additions to our staff, and I know they are excited to continue to meet the community.

The MPD will again be active with blight and ordinance violations enforcement this year. We continue to work with property owners, in an effort to continue to improve and keep Montgomery looking nice. As most of you are aware, we will have two large road construction projects commencing this year. Roads north of Boulevard Avenue and 4th Street West (Highway 13) will be having substantial construction this summer. These projects will affect travel around Montgomery. Please plan for and have patience for the rerouting of traffic, especially during Kolacky Days weekend.

For National Police Week, we are again honored to have Tom Stonehouse as the “Midnight Piper” on May 15th at the Montgomery Police Department. If you’re available, please come the MPD at midnight on the 15th. It is truly an emotional performance.

As always, should you have a concern, complaint, or comment, please do not hesitate to contact me or any Montgomery police officer. We continue to enjoy serving the citizens of Montgomery.

Respectfully,

— Nathan C. Hintz #601, Chief of Police
