Gessler wins All-Big South Championship

Tri-City United (TCU) sophomore Trista Gessler won the girls 118 pound weight class at the Big South Conference Championships held Saturday, Jan. 11 at Jackson County Central.

Gessler, rated 6th in Class AA at 118 pounds, pinned two opponents before decisioning Bernie Rock of Luverne, 13-8. Rock is a two-time State runner-up and the loss to Gessler was her first this season.

Also earning All-Big South Conference honors were junior Griffin Lemieux and sophomore Tucker Skluzacek.

Skluzacek placed 2nd at 133 pounds and Lemieux placed 3rd at 121 pounds.

Skluzacek picked up two first period falls before losing 9-1 in the championship to 5th rated Pierce Rohman of Martin County. Skluzacek is 21-4 this season.

Lemieux won three matches, one by fall, major decision, and injury default, and lost one in the semifinals by technical fall. He is 14-11 this season.

The Titans placed eighth in the 14 team conference meet, one of the toughest in the state. TCU scored 80.5 team points. Marshall, rated 10th in Class AA, won the meet with 222 points. New Ulm Area, rated 8th in Class AA, placed second with 180 points. Jackson County Central rated 8th in Class A, placed third with 167.5 points.

The remaining teams in descending order include Pipestone Area (113), Martin County (98), St. Peter (91.5), Waseca (89), TCU (80.5), Redwood Valley (69), Worthington (52), Luverne (40), Windom/Mountain Lake (38.5), St. James/Madelia (26.50), and Blue Earth Area (3).

Others placing for the Titans were sophomore Keegan O’Meara placing 4th at 139 pounds, sophomore Gage Factor placing fourth at 127 pounds, and senior Blake Herman placing fifth at 145 pounds.

TCU also competed in a pair of duals Thursday, Jan. 9. They were defeated by Marshall (65-6) and Windom/Mountain Lake (43-22).

The Titans will return to the mat Thursday, Jan. 16, when they host a quadrangular, and will compete at the New Ulm Triangular Thursday, Jan. 23.
