WEM athletics to see some Section changes next year

Every two years the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) places teams in competitive Sections for all extra curricular activities.
For the most part, there aren’t many changes. Most teams stay in the same class and the same Section.
According to the MSHSL, the competitive section placement process includes:
• Determining league enrollments by using enrollment and free/reduced lunch information provided by the Minnesota Department of Education.
• Creating classification cut-offs for each activity to determine the class of competition for each team.
• Collecting and applying opt-up requests by teams from member schools seeking to move up from their asigned class.
• Consideration and selectivity granting appeals from member schools for teams to move down one class from their assigned class based on numerous factors.
• Placement of teams into sections based on board policy that includes geographic prximity and balancing the number of teams in each section.
Each activity classification enrollment has cut-offs. Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (WEM) is on the edge of many of those classifications.
WEM’s enrollment number used is 209 according to the MSHSL. This is based on the top four grades.
They are the fifth biggest school in the Gopher Conference and they teeter between Class A and Class AA in most activities. Randolph (264), Triton (246), Medford (218), and Blooming Prairie (211) are larger.
The remainder of the conference schools include JWP (205), Kenyon-Wanamingo (204), NRHEG (203), United South Central (182), Hayfield (157), and Faribault BA (115).
