Mummes find Bullhead Days medallion after first clue
Clue No. 1 in the Waterville Bullhead Days medallion hunt is usually very vague.
Clues No. 2 and 3 are also.
But the first clue was enough for 18-year-old Sam Mumme of Waterville and his 22-year-old cousin Zach of Chicago.
The clue: Hooray! It’s Bullhead Days! It’s time to celebrate summer, parks, and our local waters. Happy trails to you, was all they needed to cash in on the $150 Bullhead Bucks Prize.
Sam, has been searching for the medallion for years. This was Zach’s first Bullhead Days.
The first clue was made available at 6 p.m. on Friday night of Bullhead Days. A little more than 2 1/2 hours later the Mumme duo had the medallion in hand and were showing their jealous family members who have also attempted to find the medallion in years past.
“We went out right away and looked at trails, parks, and water,” Sam said. “All the places we looked under and over everything. We checked all signs and everything.”
Zach just kind of followed along since his cousin knew the city much better.
Then around 8:30 p.m. they were getting close to quitting for the evening when they went to the swimming beach in a kiosk which featured Welcome to Waterville brochures. The medallion was stuck inside one of these brochures in a plastic bag.
Not to leave any stone unturned, the Mummes pulled out the stack of brochures and the medallion fell to the ground.
“It was a lot of luck because of the difficulty in not knowing what it (the medallion) looked like,” Sam said.
The approximately 2 inches wide, circular medallion is dark copper in color and has Bullhead Days etched into it.
