The City of Elysian is looking for funding for a new water treatment plant.

Mayor Tom McBroom made a plea on behalf of the city at both meetings of the House of Representatives and Senate Wednesday, March 8 and Thursday, March 9.

Proposals for clean water and wastewater infrastructure upgrades in Elysian, Blue Earth, and Lewisville were heard. These bills were authored and presented to the committees by Senator Rich Draheim (R-Madison Lake), who represents all three communities.

"Access to safe and clean water is one of the fundamental expectations that people have from their government,” Draheim said. “For small communities like Blue Earth, Elysian, and Lewisville, upgrading their water infrastructure is a daunting task, if not impossible to do without state support. By investing in these crucial infrastructure projects, we can guarantee that these communities have access to clean, safe, reliable water infrastructure.”

The City of Elysian applied to have the new Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTP) projects listed on the Project Priority List for Fiscal Year 2023. The project scored 30 points and ranked 8th in the priority list, according to McBroom.

The project was listed as not fundable at this time because it was the first time the project was submitted and no new projects were funded from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund in Fiscal Year 2023.

Senate File 1974 provides $3.5 million to the City of Elysian to build a new water treatment plant to treat drinking water for radium, manganese, and iron bacteria.

The current water system consists of two wells, an elevated water tower, and a water distribution system. The only well located in town near the water tower can provide potable water to the community. The second well is inundated by iron bacteria and cannot be used as a potable source for the city.
