Buccaneer girls give No. 6 rated Hayfield a battle

The WEM girls basketball team gave the Class A No. 6 rated Hayfield squad all they could handle Thursday, Jan. 25 in Waterville.

The Bucs used an eightpoint scoring run to eliminate a nine point deficit midway through the second half against the Vikings.

Alayna Atherton scored a pair of baskets and Addison Condon and Ashlyn Pelant added baskets during the eight-point run.

But Hayfield showed they are one of the top teams in the state when they countered that WEM run with a 12-0 run of their own, holding WEM scoreless for nearly six minutes and held on for a 54-45 win.

The Vikings shot 43 percent from the field to 36 percent for the Bucs. Hayfield also held a 43-25 rebounding advantage and a 34-22 points in the paint advantage.

Atherton was WEM’s top scorer with 10 points and she had six rebounds and four assists.

Condon and Kylie LaFrance each scored nine points. LaFrance hit three, three-pointers and led the team with seven rebounds.

Tianna Pope had seven points and Ashlyn Pelant had five assists.
