Bakken wins special school board election

Long-time local teacher Jon Bakken has earned a spot in the WEM Board of Education following a special election held Tuesday, August 10. The WEM Board canvassed the votes Friday, August 13 in the WEM Elementary lobby.
Bakken received 113 votes, 10 more than runner-up David Schuster who received 103 votes. Matthew Klicker was third in the race with 74 votes.
Bakken received 61 votes in Waterville, 30 in Elysian, 16 in Morristown, and 6 votes through absentee ballots.
Schuster received 56 votes in Waterville, 15 in Elysian, 25 in Morristown, and seven votes through absentee ballots.
Klicker received 21 votes in Waterville, nine in Elysian, and 44 in Morristown.
Bakken has 43 years of teaching experience. He said in his questionnaire two weeks ago he would like to be involved in the hiring of a new superintendent, would like to keep good teachers here, hire the best quality teachers for open positions, and make sure decisions are made thinking of what is best for the students.
Bakken will join Gary Michael, Jon Velishek, June Rezac, Jeff Stangler, Jay Schneider, and Travis Bowman on the board. His term will conclude at the end of 2022. Bakken replaces Pam Baker who resigned her position earlier this year.
