Bucs claim conference title with perfect 14-0 record

The WEM boys basketball team finished its 2019-20 regular season with three games last week.

Each one of these games were completely different in nature. The Bucs won two of the three.

The week started Tuesday, Feb. 18 with a 72-70 loss to Class AA No. 7 rated Minnesota Valley Lutheran. There were 12 lead changes, eight ties, and the winning basket was scored with 1.5 seconds remaining. Mason Cox scored the winning basket.

The Bucs traveled to Belle Plaine Thursday, Feb. 20 and defeated the Tigers 85-74. Belle Plaine led 29-8 to start the game but were outscored 77-46 the final 25 minutes.

The following night WEM hosted Faribault BA in the regular season and Gopher Conference finale. The only thing which was in doubt in this game was the final score after the Bucs opened up a 58-15 halftime lead. WEM hit the century mark when Travis Van Houdt hit a rebound basket with time expiring, giving the Bucs a 100-31 win. They were Van Houdt’s first points this season.

The victory over the Cardinals gave the Bucs a perfect 14-0 record in the conference and a 24-2 overall record.

WEM will host a South Sub- Section playoff game Saturday at 7 p.m. Their opponent will be either Mankato Loyola or Madelia. If they win this game, they will play at Lake Crystal at 6 p.m. Thursday March 5 in the South Sub-Section Semifinals. WEM is the No. 1 seed and Springfield is the No. 2 seed. Seven teams in the Sub-Section have 16 wins or more.
