Volleyball team tops Shakopee; goes 2-3 at Marshall

New Prague Trojan volleyball defeated former Missota Conference and current Section 2AAA nemesis Shakopee, then went 2-3 to take 15th place in the Southwest Minnesota Challenge tournament in Marshall last week.

The Trojans, 6-4 on the young season, were scheduled to host Mankato East Tuesday, Sept. 11. They will travel to Mankato West Thursday, Sept. 13, and host Belle Plaine Monday, Sept. 17. The Trojans host Hutchinson Thursday, Sept. 20, to open their Wright County Conference schedule.

Trojans 3, Sabers 1 New Prague defeated Shakopee, ranked No. 6 in Class AAA, for the first time in at least five tries, winning three sets to one. Scores were 26-24, 25-20, 10-25, 25-20. going back more than 10 years, the Trojans had only beaten the powerful Sabers once, in the Section 2AAA tournament in 2014.

"This was an exciting match and a real team effort," said Coach Angie Andersen. "We saw our team step up and bring their best game. The team showed real grit, focus and determination on a full team level. It was a fun match and there is much from this effort for the team to be proud of."

Sophia Andersen had 20 kills and Dani Friedges added 10 more. McKenna Vacek had four ace serves and Andersen two. Friedges was a perfect 19-of-19 serving. Chloe Davis had 26 assists. Vacek had 24 serve receptions and 26 digs, and Amanda Giesen had four blocks.
