Trojans clinch share of WCC East volleyball crown

With a five-set win over Waconia Tuesday, Oct. 9, the New Prague Trojan volleyball team has clinched at least a share of the Wright County Conference East championship.

The Trojans (15-7, 4-0 WCC East) will win the title outright with a win over Holy Family Catholic on Tuesday, Oct. 16. That is the final regular season home match for the Trojans, and will be played at New Prague Middle School due to floor maintenance scheduled to be done at the high school next week. Before that match, the Trojans compete in the Eastview Tournament Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13.

The Section 2AAA tournament begins Wednesday, Oct. 24, with first round games, although the Trojans are in a position to receive a first round bye. Quarterfinal games will be played Friday, Oct. 26, at the high seed.

Last week, the Trojans lost a non-conference match in five sets to Bloomington Jefferson, then swept Orono to stay unbeaten in the conference. At the Hopkins tournament on Saturday, Oct. 6, New Prague went 2-2 and earned a seventh place finish of 16 teams. Details of the win over Waconia will be in next week’s edition of The Times.

Jaguars 3, Trojans 2 Bloomington Jefferson and New Prague engaged in a back-and-fourth contest, with the Trojans winning the first set 25-19, then dropping the next two 25-13, 28-26. New Prague tied it with a 25-20 win in the fourth set, but Jefferson prevailed with a 15-11 fifth set.

"The physical effort was there all night, but we just couldn't get into a good rhythm with our game," Coach Angie Andersen said. "Jefferson did a good job of keeping us on our toes and making us guess and we needed to respond faster and smarter."

The Jaguars are coached by former Trojan player Crystal Pexa Dohlman.
