Soup supper a 25-year tradition

It’s a 25-year tradition that feeds several hundred people in one night and helps feed many more throughout the year.

The St. Wenceslaus Church Soup Kitchen group held its annual Soup supper Monday, Feb. 18, in the church basement. This year’s event served 316 guests, who enjoyed either chili, vegetable beef or chicken noodle soup.

Norb Sticha, who coordinates the event, said 15 volunteers started working Monday morning, preparing 22 five-gallon pails of soup from scratch. In all, 25 volunteers worked on the project, with those attending making a freewill offering. Figures for this year were not available, but Sticha said they were hoping to approach last year’s $4,000.

“We get anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000… it varies from year to year. Last year was a banner year, but it’s usually somewhere in the middle,” Sticha said. In addition to the money raised, First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association Branch 1 makes a $600 matching grant donation.

He said 18 of those five gallon pails were served - totaling 90 gallons.
