Salute to our bus drivers

By:
Chuck Kajer, The New Prague Times

Last week, The Times used this space to talk about the efforts of local snowplow drivers. There is one other group of public employees who deserve accolades for their efforts during this snowy winter:

School bus drivers.

New Prague Area Schools has a fleet of 61 vehicles. That includes 24 large buses and 14 smaller vehicles that pick up thousands of students daily. They put on between 4,000 and 5,000 miles each day of the school year, from late August until late May or early June, they safely transport students to and from school. They do this on warm, sunny days and they do this on cold, snowy days - unless the cold and snow present too much of a danger.

Bus drivers report for duty daily between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m., make sure their buses are in working order and head out throughout the city and the countryside to pick up their students. They do two routes each morning and repeat those routes in the afternoon. Most days, they have no problems, but on some days, including an unusually large number of days this month, they have had to deal with snow, ice and cold, making driving difficult. If you have problems driving your car in these conditions, imagine what it’s like for a bus driver with a much bigger vehicle, who is entrusted with the well-being of several dozen students.

These dedicated drivers do their best to make sure the kids make it to school on time and get home safely. Sometimes winter weather slows down the trip and makes driving difficult, but they are out there, doing their job. And for that, we owe them our thanks.
