Sally Schmid, 78
Sally A. Schmid, age 78, of New Prague, died suddenly but peacefully with her family at her side on Friday, August 10, 2018, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, MN. Sally was born on April 29, 1940 in New Prague to Benedict J. and Katharine (Heinen) Bruzek. She attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School, graduated from New Prague High School, and attended the University of Minnesota before finishing her education at the Minnesota School of Business. She worked as a secretary for a Medical Lab for a short time before marriage. She married Eugene C. Schmid, Jr. on May 26, 1962 at St. Wenceslaus Church in New Prague, where the couple made their home and raised their five children. Sally eventually joined her husband at Schmid Agency as an excellent insurance agent. Sally exuded kindness and compassion. After the tragic death of her son, Jeffrey, she started the Suicide Grief Group along with Sister Ginny Heldorfer and ran that program for 13 years, touching many lives with compassion and loving care. She was a member of the Sunshine Bridge Club, a highlight of her life for over 50 years. The greatest joy in her life came from spending time with her family and a favorite family event that has occurred for 56 years was the annual vacation “up north” at the lake. She loved gardening and was happy when she could sit on her deck at home and watch the abundant wildlife that would visit. Sally exemplified kindness and grace to all who knew her.
Sally is survived by her husband and love of her life, Gene Schmid of New Prague; children, Amy (Roger) Schmitz of New Prague, Philip Schmid of St. Paul, Eric (Lisa) Schmid of New Prague, Cathy (Kirk) Nelson of Urbandale, IA; grandchildren, Whitney (Aaron) Simon, Ryan (Sheena) Schmitz, Katie Schmitz, Clara Ekegren-Schmid, Jeremy Schmid, Alice Schmid, Zach Nelson, Sophie Nelson; great-grandchildren, Gaige, Brylee, & William; sisters, Mary McDonald of St. Paul, Peggy (Tom) Baldwin of Cocoa Beach, FL. She is preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey; parents; brother-in-law, Bill McDonald.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 11:30 AM, with Mass starting at 11:45 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Sally’s cousin, Father John Parkos officiating and Father Kevin Clinton con-celebrating. Visitation will take place 2 hours prior to service starting at 9:30 also at church. Burial will occur in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, followed by lunch at the KC Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to St. Wenceslaus School. bruzekfuneralhome.com
