New Habitat homeowner thankful
Mindy Wescott of New Prague became a new homeowner through Habitat for Humanity South Central Minnesota. A dedication ceremony for Wescott’s new home along Wencel Avenue NE was held on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and was attended by 17 people representing the New Prague chapter of Habitat for Humanity South Central Minnesota, its Mankato office and volunteers who helped build the house.
“It’s thrilling that we’ve gotten to this point,” said Pam O’Brien, co-chair of the New Prague chapter of Habitat for Humanity with Mary Bender. She added it was an appropriate time as it was Thanksgiving.
Ground was broken on the home on June 20 this year on the seventh Habitat House in the community. Habitat for Humanity has been helping local families own houses of their own since 2005 when the first house was built inNew Prague.
Deacon Bob Wagner read from the Gospel of Mark that the greatest commandment is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself.” He said they were fulfilling one of those great commandments with the dedication of the house. “We are truly loving our neighbor.”
“It still feels like a dream,” said Wescott about her new home. She would drive by nearly every day to see the progress of it. She smiled as she recalled helping with the yard work in planting trees and other greenery, noting how messy that work was. Wescott has made 13 to 14 moves and over that time she’s collected many plants, which were going to find a home in her new house.
