Lacrosse wins 3 on the road

The New Prague Trojan JV girls lacrosse team continued its winning ways, defeating Holy Family, Cretin-Derham Hall and Proctor/Hermantown last week, all on the road.

The Trojans faced Mankato Tuesday, May 7. On Friday, May 10, they play Minneapolis at Parade Stadium, and on Saturday, May 11, they host Proctor/Hermantown at 1 p.m. at Trojan Stadium, in their final home game of the season. New Prague plays at Eden Prairie on Thursday, May 16.

Trojans 8, Fire 5

The Trojans struggled early in the cold and rain as they faced Holy Family Catholic Tuesday, April 30.

“It wasn’t our usual level of play in the first half. We were hanging right with Holy Family, but struggled on attack as we weren’t taking our time and setting up the plays like we had in previous games,” Coach Julie Bowers said. “We came back tough in the second half, slowed things down and our defense held.”

Molly Giesen had a great night at high defense and backer.  Lydia Velishek and Noella Tupy had a great night on low attack. Velishek had an assist from behind the net to Evie Wegner for a goal in addition to scoring one herself. Tupy was aggressive down low as well and drew a violation for a penalty shot and scored to solidify the lead. Wegner led the team with ground ball pick ups and assists with Anna Holden right behind her.  Despite a hand injury that occurred in the Chaska game, Eme Halbmaier has managed to keep scoring goals with her wrist taped up. She led the team with three goals, with Wegner getting two and Makenna Apolloni, Tupy and Velishek each scoring one.

Brigid Schumacher did a great job in goal, facing 12 shots on goal, and making seven saves.

Trojans 13, Raiders 1

The Trojans finally had a chance to play in decent weather as they travelled to St. Paul to take on Cretin-Derham Hall, and they enjoyed another victory.

Coach Julie Bowers said she had big contributions from all players. She singled out Kaidyn Mulvihill, who had a great game showing her speed and aggressiveness as a mid coming off the bench.    “For her first year playing lacrosse she has certainly picked the game up quickly,” she said.

Bella Bustamante also showed her aggressive side and made  key outlet passes in the middle of the field helping the team get downfield and score quickly.

Eme Halbmaier led the Trojans with four goals, while Evie Wegner had three and Makenna Apolloni two. Anna Holden, Heather Coughlin, Noella Tupy and Mackenzie Vlasak had one each.

Assists came from Halbmaier and Wegner, each with three and Holden and Schmidt each with one.

Brigid Schumacher  stopped four of five shots.

Trojans 13, Stealth 7

After a long bus ride, New Prague came out ready to play against the Proctor/Hermantown Stealth varsity team, scoring early and setting the tone for the game in a 13-7 win.

“The first goal came off of a draw win to Evie Wegner, who passed to Lydia Velishek for the goal, and our 22 fans went crazy,” Coach Julie Bowers said. “It was certainly motivating to have them there with us.”

She said P/H was tough and fast and played a tough style similar to Holy Family.

“We made the necessary adjustments. Callie Cheever was a strong defender who had the speed to slow them down in time for all of our defenders to get back. Velishek had her best game of the season so far at low attack, connecting with the back of the net twice and keeping her head up looking for the assists. New Prague’s penalty kill played well, not allowing a shot during one penatly.

“We couldn’t be more proud of how our girls have been handling themselves on and off the field,” Bowes said.

Wegner, Makenna Apolloni and Anna Holden had three goals each and Eme Halbmaier and Velishek had two each. Wegner had five assists and Apolloni, Holden and Velishek had one each.

Brigid Schumacher  had a fantastic night again in goal and saw more action with 17 shots on goal, saving 10 of them.  She had some key clears and clutch saves.
