Gymnasts earn wins over two state-rated teams
The New Prague gymnastics team got a chance to compete last week against two teams both ranked in the top 25 in their respective classes.
The first event was Wednesday, Feb. 24 against Class AA No. 25 rated Lakeville North.
The Trojans are rated 7th in Class AA and pulled out a 140.685-137.355 win over North.
“It is always good to see North before Sections as they are always a tough competitor,” New Prague head coach Mark Morphew said.
The following night, Thursday, Feb. 25, Class A No. 18 rated Delano traveled to New Prague.
The Trojans picked up another win, downing the Tigers 140.450 to 131.525.
Lakeville North featured one of the top gymnasts in the state, Kaitlyn Nguyen. She has the third best all-around score in the Metro area (37.200) and is among the top five in three other events.
Sophomore Samantha Solheid captured the all-around title with a score of 35.550. This was Solheid’s all-time best all-around score.
Sophomore Ella Barsness placed second with a score of 34.375. Nguyen placed third (28.525) competing in only three of the four individual events.
Junior Ellie Morris led a top-four finish for New Prague on the floor exercise. Morris won the event (9.250) and was followed by S. Solheid (9.050), Barsness (9.000), and Maura Erickson (8.850).
