Great turnout at MusicFest raises $19,500

A beautiful winter day helped lead to a great turnout for MusicFest III at the Park Ballroom in New Prague on Saturday, Feb. 22. Lots of sun and temperatures in the low 40s likely helped the fundraiser for the New Prague Veterans Memorial as 550-600 attended the dance and silent auction. The combined events raised approximately $19,500 that will go to the Veterans Memorial that is scheduled to be built this summer.

The silent auction offered a vast assortment of articles from autographed photos of sports stars to a range of gift baskets for children or adults. Two of the highlights in the silent auction were both donated by Franny (Ziska) Tuma. One was a crocheted bedspread, made her mom, Mayme Janovsky Ziska, the other was a crocheted tablecloth made by Tuma’s aunt, Rose L. Janovsky Factor.

Tuma said both pieces come with history, as her mom and aunt created the linen pieces during World War II. Tuma’s father, Frank Ziska, was an Army Tec 5 (technician fifth grade). “He served in Germany and France during WWII,” said Tuma.

“My mom passed the time while Daddy was in service crocheting this bedspread and caring for a baby, (me) born in 1943,” she said. “This was her stress relieving project.”

Tuma said her aunt and other ladies would crochet during the war in the time before television.

Both her parents were involved in the community. Frank Ziska was a member of the VFW and the American Legion until he died in 1991. Mayme Ziska was also in the VFW and the American Legion Auxiliary until she died in January 1970. Frank Ziska served as a bartender and custodian at the Park Ballroom. He also served in...
