Eugene E. “Gene” Bisek, 85

Eugene E. “Gene” Bisek, age 85, of New Prague, died peacefully after a brief illness on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.  Gene was born on August 10, 1935 in New Prague to Emil F. and Mary N. (Novak) Bisek.  After graduating from New Prague High School, Gene entered the US Air Force and was stationed in Saudi Arabia.  He married Sandra Swygart in Vale, OR on February 2, 1957.  The couple had 3 children together.  Gene married Mary A. Thorne on June 8, 1985 in New Prague and enjoyed 35 wonderful years together.  Gene worked for many years for Schmidt Brewery and Cenex.  The occupation which gave him the most joy, however, and from which he retired, was as a bus driver for New Prague School District.  Beloved by his bus students, Gene also brought magic  to the lives of hundreds of children for many, many years every Christmas serving as Santa’s helper.  With his affable personality, his ready smile, kindness, and the gift of gab, Gene gravitated to anything that allowed him to be with people.  He was a dedicated member of the Eagles, a Cubmaster when his son was in Cub Scouts, and an avid member of the New Prague Hockey Association.  He loved sports, especially hockey, football, and baseball.  He enjoyed fishing and playing cards.  Gene loved life, living it to the fullest and loved nothing more than being surrounded by his children and grandchildren.  He lived out the caption found under his photo in his high school yearbook, “I shall laugh and laugh.”  He could most recently be seen travelling down Main Street on his motorized scooter, keeping an eye on the improvements to the street and stopping to visit with whomever he passed along the way.  The twinkle in his eyes and the warmth in his voice will be missed by so very many.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Mary of New Prague; children, Tami Madsen (Bill Hulett) of Maple Lake, Kim (Jim) Ries of New Prague, Jim (Michelle) Bisek of Jordan; step-children, David Carlson of Litchfield, Patrick (Lori) Carlson of Zimmerman, Kimberly Carlson of Arizona, Desiree (Cindy) Birmingham of Austin, TX; step-daughter-in-law, Kathy Carlson of Chaska; grandchildren, Cassie Madsen (fiancé, Zack Friedli), Caleb Madsen, Nathan (Jolene) Ries, Tiana (Chris) Nelson, Brandon (Sam) Ries, Jamie (Dustin) Durham, Evan, Abby, and Corbett Bisek; step-grandchildren, Mattie & Andy Born & Samantha & Ben Carlson; 9 great-grandchildren; siblings, George (Carol) Bisek of Lindstrom, Judie Cervenka of St. Patrick.  He is preceded in death by first wife, Sandra Swygart in 2001; parents; Son-in-law, Michael Madsen; Step-son, Victor Carlson; step-grandson, Cole Carlson; brother, Leonard Bisek.

Memorial Celebration of Life Service for the immediate family will be held Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 2:00 pm at FaithPoint Lutheran Church with Reverend Dr. Steve Trewartha officiating.  A larger celebration of life for family and friends will be held at a later date when Covid restrictions have been lifted.
