Election season underway

The 2018 General Election is less than five months away, and the primary election is less than two months away.

Between now and November 7, Minnesotans are sure to be inundated with TV and radio commercials, newspaper ads and direct mail pieces, all extolling the virtues of one candidate or one political party or another. It’s all part of our election traditions.

The New Prague Times has already begun preparing for the elections. We will have a voter’s guide in our July 26 issue, in anticipation for the August 14 primary election. The election will have a number of races, most notably in our area a four-way primary for the office of Scott County Sheriff. There are also races on the ballot for congressional seats and state offices, including governor and lieutenant governor, which will prove to be interesting.

The Times understands its responsibility to present balanced coverage to its readers. In the weeks to come, we will be sending information to candidates for the primary and general elections and will announce our policies on letters to the editor and campaign coverage.

Also this year, for the first time, both the City of New Prague and the New Prague Area School Board will have their council and board seats on the same general election ballot. In the past, the school board had held its elections in odd-numbered years. The change means more voters will have a say in who will be on the school board. Voters will need to pay close attention to the race and candidates will need to work harder to get their message to the voters.

The Times thanks those who are seeking public office. A willingness to serve is a key part of our democracy. Whether you agree with a candidate or not, you need to appreciate a person’s willingness to put their record on the line for voters to examine.
