Coming together as a community

One of the benefits of a small town is seeing people come together as a community to help others or work on a project. Over the years I have covered I don’t know how many fundraisers to help a family with medical needs or to help the community in general with such things as the food shelf.

This Friday and Saturday a group of youngsters will come together to perform a production that was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shrek Jr. was originally meant to be the 2020 spring musical at New Prague Middle School. It will now be staged by Generations Theatre Company at the New Prague High School auditorium. About half of the students who were going to act and sing in the musical are coming back to perform.

To me, what’s wonderful about this is that through work with the directors from the middle school and Generations Theatre Company, plus parents and students, a show that might have been forgotten is being revived. People who realized how important the show was to those who worked hard on it the first time came together to provide a group of young actors a chance to shine.

It was also good to see the community come together for the fireworks show on Saturday, July 3, both those who helped sponsor it through donations and the number of people who showed up for it. There definitely seemed to be a large crowd spread out over the entire grounds around the New Prague Middle School. After the last year it was understandable that people wanted to gather in groups of family and friends to watch what was an incredible show. I hope others enjoyed the show.
