City Council deals with Dozinky requests

The New Prague City Council dealt with two items concerning Dozinky, the city’s Czech Harvest Festival, at its Monday, July 16, meeting. The first was approval of a request from the Chamber of Commerce to expand the time food vendors can serve their fares on Saturday. The second were requests from Jay Kartak and Adam Gill, co-chairs of the Rick Tietz Memorial Alumni Softball Tournament, concerning security and insurance at the tourney, which is held during Dozinky.

Kartak and Gill explained that people can buy alcohol at the tourney, but last year there were those underage trying to buy. When they wouldn’t sell to the minors, some would use foul language or threaten them physically. While they have been able to handle the problem, they felt it was starting to get to be over their heads. They asked if a police officer could be onsite during the tournament.

Mayor Chuck Nicolay noted that might be hard as the New Prague Police Department, plus deputies from the Scott and Le Sueur counties sheriff’s departments are brought in to help, and they are all busy. He asked Kartak and Gill if they could issue wrist bands to those that can drink. Kartak said they don’t do that, because of concerns someone might transfer the wrist bands.

Police Chief Jim Gareis said they do have officers rotate through, but they could have a Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to the area.

Kartak and Gill were also concerned about insurance for the event and who would be responsible for it. They had thought the city.....
