It was an early morning for about 70 youngsters and their guides as the Scott County Sheriff’s Office held its annual Youth Fishing Derby Monday, Aug. 5, at Cedar Lake Farm Regional Park.

The event was first held in 1999, as a cat fishing derby on the Minnesota River. Due to the fluctuation of the river levels from year to year, it was decided to move the event permanently to Cedar Lake, taking advantage of the facilities at the park for the post-derby lunch and prize drawing.

Since the Fishing Derby started in 1999, more than 1,000 local children have had the opportunity to fish with law enforcement officers, emergency medical responders, firefighters, and professional avid fisherman. It’s a chance to show kids a different side of law enforcement, without the uniform, duty belt, and squad car.

This is a volunteer and sponsor-driven event that provides the kids with everything they need for a day of fishing on the lake, including fishing gear, food and beverages, prizes for everyone. All the boats are privately owned and captained by volunteers.

Youngsters were on the lake from about 7 a.m. until about 11:30 a.m., as threatening weather forced the boats to shore about an hour early. Youngsters caught more than 1,000 fish during the event.

The event is funded by corporate and individual sponsors.
