Be ready for severe weather

It’s Severe Storm Awareness Week in Minnesota. What better way to celebrate than with an old fashioned April snowstorm.

That’s right, a winter storm is expected to hit the area late Wednesday and continue through to Friday. Depending on the storm track and other conditions, we could get anywhere from six to 15 inches of snow, potentially rivaling last year’s April snowfall.

But regardless of this week’s weather, it’s time to prepare for summer storms, and that’s what this week is all about. During the middle of the expected storm, a state-wide tornado drill had been scheduled for Thursday, April 11, however that drill has been cancelled due to the Winter Storm Warning expected that day. Still, it is important to think about what should happen in the event of a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning.

People have a natural curiosity about the weather. When a tornado warning is sounded, the first reaction of many people is to look outside and see what’s happening. But it’s not a good idea to go outside or find an elevated spot to get a good view of the approaching storm, as some people are inclined to do. The sirens are there to warn you about possible severe weather. Mother Nature is not to be tested. You should go inside and find a safe spot in the house to ride out the storm. If you have one, bring a weather radio. Stay away from windows and stay safe.

Even though the statewide drill has been cancelled, it’s a good idea to plan ahead. The weather can be unpredictable. You never know in advance when or where the storm will do the most damage.
