‘Back to Basics’ display has roots in recent events

The idea for “Back to Basics,” the new display by the New Prague Area Historical Society, came from the recent events of the COVID-19 pandemic. The display will be up at the New Prague Library through the first part of November.

Dennis Dvorak of the New Prague Area Historical Society noted how the restrictions and guidelines due to the pandemic changed people’s lifestyles. For those who grew up in the 1930s and 1940s they will remember the restrictions their families had to deal with due to the Great Depression and World War II.

Dvorak said with the recent pandemic there were shortages of flour, spices and seasoning as more people cooked from home, made their own homemade bread or other bakery items.

There were those who dug up dirt for their own gardens. Parents and their children worked and studied from home as offices were closed or schools did distance learning. Some families decided to have meals together. There were those who adjusted to the changes, like those in the ‘30s and ‘40s. “We didn’t have fast food, instead we went on picnics,” said Dvorak.
