The ‘Art of Dumplings’

Nearly 30 people, from children to adults, participated in the “Dumpling Make and Take” activity at the New Prague Library the evening of Tuesday, March 12. Hosted by the Czech Heritage Club, the group was taught the finer points of making dumplings by Hana Matousek, who immigrated from the Czech Republic and has taught many cooking classes. She has also been active in different occasions concerning food, especially with the Czech and Slovak Sokol Minnesota.

“I’ve done a lot of Czech cooking and baking all over the place,” said Matousek, who has been an American citizen for 40 years.

Participants were instructed to bring their own bowl, a wooden spoon, kitchen towel and measuring cup for making the dumplings. Matousek said there were an assortment of dumplings a person could make, from large ones that are part of the meal to small ones that could be used in soups. The ingredients for that night included Wondra flour, baking soda, eggs, milk, parsley, bread crumbs and other items that were provided.

Several families from New Prague and Montgomery were trying their hand at making dumplings, among them was Jill Koplen and her daughter Olivia; Dale Novak and his daughters Grace and Addie, who were having a fun time making dumplings for the first time at the family activity.
