Relating the history of kroje

“I am not an expert, I describe myself as an enthusiast,” said Anne Jans during her presentation about kroje (Czech traditional ethnic dress) at the Tuesday, June 11, meeting of the Czech Heritage Club. Held in the second floor meeting room at New Prague City Hall, Jans had her collection of kroje.

She explained the reason she doesn’t consider herself an expert is because there is so much detail in the various forms of kroj. Jans was the Miss Czech Slovak MN Queen in 1999 and currently serves on the board of directors for the Miss Czech Slovak MN Pageant. Jans thought the first kroje she made was good, but found out it needed a little more work. She has since continued to work on improving her kroje.

Jans said the style of kroje represents the different regions of the Czech Republic. During her presentation she detailed the differences in dresses from the regions of Moravia, Bohemia and Slovakia.

“It can be broken down even further,” she noted, adding that at one time, people could even tell what village a person was from by their kroje.
