Region 3C playoffs underway; 2 teams qualify for state

The Region 3C playoffs began Sunday, July 29, and already two teams have qualified for the State Class C baseball tournament, which begins August 17 in New Prague, Shakopee and Jordan.

New Market and Faribault won second round games on Tuesday, July 31, to earn berths in the tournament. Details on those games will be in next week’s issue. Two more teams will earn berths with wins in the double-elimination playoffs on Friday, Aug. 3.

After the Dakota-Rice- Scott League season ended, eight teams competed for four spots in the regional playoffs, with four other teams earning byes into the regions. Montgomery, St. Benedict, Faribault and Shakopee won their best-ofthree series to qualify for regions.

While all state qualifiers will be determined as of Friday, games will continue through Sunday, Aug. 12, to determine the seeding for the four teams.

DRS playoff results

Montgomery vs. Lonsdale Tuesday, July 24 Mallards 11, Aces 1 Montgomery hosted Lonsdale to win the series opener. Owen Little pitched a seveninning complete game, allowing just one run as the Mallards won 11-1. Joe Sabal pitched five innings and took the loss. For Lonsdale, Cole Pint had a hit and a walk. Montgomery’s Tom Flicek had four hits and three RBIs, while Tyler Bednar had two doubles and two RBIs.

Thursday, July 26 Mallards 13, Aces 11 The Mallards traveled to Lonsdale for game two and scored an impressive comefrom- behind win. Lonsdale led 8-3 when Montgomery scored eight runs in the eighth inning to tie the game, then added two runs in the top of the ninth for the win. Zach Breedan had two tworun home runs for Lonsdale, with Cole Pint, Dan Turner and Jordan Yetzer each getting two hits. Ted Christian picked up the win in relief for Montgomery. Jake McCabe, Pat Lloyd and Owen Little each had three hits for the Mallards.

St. Benedict vs. Veseli Tuesday, July 24 Saints 7, Warriors 6 St. Benedict scored five runs in the top of the seventh for a come-from-behind 7-6 win over Veseli. Matthias Duevel was the winning pitcher in relief of Tanner Oakes, who left the game due to illness. Jeremy Heitkamp pitched the final three innings for a save. Andrew Huss and Zach Bakko both had two hits for the Saints. Ben Doerr took the loss, going 6-2/3 innings. He struck out nine. Bryan Schmitz came on in relief. Cody Shimota went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Tyler Busch also had two hits, including a double.

Thursday, July 26 Saints 10, Warriors 9 Veseli fell behind early, but fought back with eight runs, falling short in a 10-9 loss to St. Benedict, giving the Saints a 2-0 win in the series. No details were available.

Webster vs. Faribault Tuesday, July 24 Lakers 16, Sox 6 Webster took a 6-5 lead into the seventh inning in their playoff opener against Faribault Tuesday, but the Lakers scored 11 runs in the seventh and the game never made it into the eighth as Faribault prevailed 16-6 via the 10-run rule. Blake Langerud, Joey Grote, Ryan Archambault, Porter Sartor and Adam Kline each had two hits for the Lakers, and Grote, Archambault and Dylan Valentyn had three RBIs. Jack Helgeson pitched seven innings and struck out six for the win. For Webster, Adam Schmitz and Jared Tucker had two hits each, with Tucker getting a double and three RBIs. Jeremy Wieland took the loss.

Thursday, July 26 Lakers 11, Sox 1 Faribault defeated Webster 11-1 in Game 2 of their series. No details were available. Shakopee vs. Prior Lake Tuesday, July 24 Mudcats 3, Coyotes 2 Prior Lake claimed a 3-2 win over Shakopee Tuesday in Prior Lake. Jonny Houston went 3-for-5 at the plate and also picked up a save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Ben Morrison got the win, allowing five hits and two runs over seven innings. Justin Hackett also pitched a scoreless eight. Shakopee’s Zak Hoffman went 3-for-4 and Chris Isensee had two hits. Isensee took the loss on the mound, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out six in five innings.

Thursday, July 26 Coyotes 11, Mudcats 5 Shakopee evened the series at one apiece, opening up a 10-0 lead after three innings on their way to a 10-5 win. Zak Hoffman and Lance Buchtel each had two hits, and Hoffman and Logan Becker both homered for the Coyotes. Jesse Nystrom got the win, with Logan Becker pitching four innings of relief. Prior Lake had two hits each from Jonny Houston, Cole Bjorge and BJ Benz. Alex Wattermann took the loss.

Friday, July 27 Coyotes 7, Mudcats 3 With the game tied 3-3, Shakopee scored three runs in the top of the eighth and added one in the ninth to take a 7-3 win over Prior Lake, giving the Coyotes the series win. Zak Hoffman had three hits and Alex Pauly, Logan Becker and Henry Henk had two hits each for Shakopee. Hoffman claimed the win on the mound, pitching a complete game and allowing seven hits and three runs, none of them earned. He struck out five. Prior Lake’s Jake Lehrer had two hits. Lucas Pumper started and took the loss.

Region 3C playoffs Sunday, July 29 Muskies 8, Coyotes 2 New Market defeated Shakopee 8-2 Sunday in the first round of the Region 3C double-elimination tournament. Kyle Bergstrom got the scoring started with a home run, then Scott Lyden’s squeeze bunt brought in Nick Rost to give the Muskies a 2- 0 lead in the second. Nate Rost hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it a 5-0 game. Andy Lazzari drove in a run with a double and Chris Isensee drove in another run to make it a 5-2 game after seven innings. New Market added three more runs down the stretch and claimed an 8- 2 win. Nate Rost got the win for the Muskies.

Orioles 13, Mallards 3 The Orioles used an eightrun second inning to jump out to an early lead that they never surrendered as they defeated Montgomery 13-3 in Veseli. Nathan Sprouls picked up the win for the Orioles pitching five innings and striking out six. Dan Novak had four hits and Dan Shetka had two hits to lead the team. James Fuerniss hit a double that scored two runs. Tom Flicek, Mike Flicek, Trevor Smisek and Ryan Iverson all had hits for the Mallards. Owen Little started and took the loss.

Irish 7, Saints 3 St. Patrick jumped to an early 5-1 lead and went on to a 7-3 win over St. Benedict. Josh Simon pitched six innings and allowed seven hits and one run for the win. He struck out four. Seth Ambroz had two hits and he, Matt Ambroz and Simon each had two RBIs. Andrew Huss had three hits and Brenden Heitkamp two for the Saints. Mitchell Martin took the loss.

Lakers 10, Bulldogs 5 Dylan Valentyn homered and Matt Lane pitched a complete game as Faribault defeated Union Hill 10-5 in Union Hill. Dan Feneis took the loss. No other details were available.
