New Market wins Region 3C title

Muskies earn 1st round bye; Faribault, New Prague and St. Patrick play this weekend

New Market used the long ball to claim the Region 3C championship Friday, Aug. 10, with an 8-1 win over Faribault at Veseli.

Earlier in the week, Faribault defeated New Prague on a bases-loaded walk to earn their way to the championship game. Faribault enters the State playoffs as the No. 2 seed from Region 3C, New Prague is the No. 3 seed and St. Patrick is the No. 4 seed.

After the championship game, the four state-bound teams were able to draft up to three pitchers from the region to supplement their pitching staffs for the state tournament.

New Market chose Conrad Masberg (Union Hill), Derek Masberg (Union Hill) and Matt Perkinson (Veseli). Faribault picked Tanner Oakes (St. Benedict), Rick Bell (Union Hill) and Jeremy Heitkamp (St. Benedict).

New Prague drafted Dan Feneis (Union Hill), Jonny Houston (Prior Lake) and Chris Isensee (Shakopee).

St. Patrick chose Ted Christian (Montgomery), Ben Morrison (Prior Lake) and Ben Doerr (Veseli).

Three of the four teams from the Dakota-Rice-Scott League/Region 3C will be in action at this week’s state tournament, which will be held in New Prague and Shakopee. New Prague, one of the host teams, will face Ortonville at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the tournament opener. St. Patrick faces Lamberton, the No. 2 seed from Region 2B, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at New Prague, and Faribault faces Stewartville Racine, from Region 5C, at 5 p.m. Sunday in Shakopee.

As the No. 1 seed, New Market gets a first round bye. They will play at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, in New Prague against either Pelican Rapids or Fort Ripley.

One more Dakota-Rice- Scott League team, Elko, also qualified for the state tournament. They are in the Class B tournament and will face the Chanhassen Redbirds at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Jordan. Elko defeated Hampton in a best-of-three series to qualify for the tournament.
