New Market falls in semifinals at state

The New Market Muskies of the Dakota-Rice-Scott League fell short in their quest for a state title.

The team won two games during the final weekend ofthe State Class C tournament.They won handily over New London-Spicer 16-0 on Friday and claimed a 1-0 win over Red Wing Sunday morning, but then lost 7-5 to Hutchinson in the tournament semifinals.

The loss put an end to an exciting weekend for the Muskies, as they fell one game short of their quest for the championship game.

New Market’s Brett Herber was named to the all-tournament team.

Muskies 16, Twins 0 The Muskies exploded for13 runs in the third inning of their third round game at theMinnesota Class C Baseball Tournament on their way to a 16-0 win over New London-Spicer Friday, Aug. 30, in Maple Lake. The game lasted less than two hours, with much of that coming in the 40-minute third inning when New Market sent 18 men to the plate. Kyle Bergstrom started the big inning with a lead off home run. Tony Vocca doubled a few batters later to bring in a run, then hit a three-run homer later in the inning. Tyler Bergstrom hit a two-run shot later in the game as the Muskies won with ease. Matt Lane, draftee from Faribault, pitched five score-less innings. Riley Ahern and Derek Bergstrom each pitched a scoreless inning as the game ended after seven innings on the 10-run rule.

Muskies 1, Aces 0 After helping win Friday’s game with his bat, Vocca pitched the Muskies into the tournament semifinals with an eight-hit shutout of Red Wing Sunday, Sept. 1, in Delano. He struck out eight batters and got out of a couple of jams. Dan Phyle got things started for the Aces with a single to lead off the game. He scored on a base hit by Andy Henkemeyer to put the Muskies up 1-0. Phyle had the defensive play of the game for the Muskies as well, as he threwout a runner at home to end a Red Wing threat in the fourth inning. New Market looked to add to their lead, loading the bases with no one out in the eighth, but a double play anda pop up ended the threat. It didn’t matter, though, as Vocca retired the side in order in the ninth. He finished with eight strikeouts.

Huskies 7, Muskies 4 New Market took an early lead, but Hutchinson cameback to tie it at 4-4. The Muskies scored in the sixth on a balk, but in the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies hit a three-run homer tha tprovided the final margin. New Market threatened in the ninth, putting two runners on base with no one out, but couldn't score. Nate Rost and Kyle Bergstrom both had three hits and Phyle, Scott Lyden, Henkemeyer and Brett Herber had two hits each. Rost started and went three innings. Lane came on in relief and took the loss.

Jordan, Chanhassen win Jordan defeated Hutchinson 4-2 to win the championship of the Class C tournament. In Class B, Chanhassen came back through the loser’s bracket to win its second straight title. They defeated Dundas 8-1 and 9-2 on the tournament’s final day.
