Helen M. Weiers, 89

Helen M. Weiers, age 89, of Union Hill, died peacefully with her family at her side on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Traditions of Montgomery.  Helen was born on August 28, 1932 in Helena Township to John and Gertrude (Gerardy) Neisen.  Tragedy struck early with the death of her mother when she was only 3 months old and her father’s death followed 6 months later.  The family of six was split up among various relatives and Helen was raised by her grandmother.  She would not meet all her siblings as a group until she was 13 and at that time the siblings made a pact that they would meet every year on the 4th of July; they held to that pact until Covid prevented that from happening.  Because of her experience, the value of family was extremely important to her.  She remembered everyone with a gift for Christmas and birthdays and sewed quilts for all the weddings and births of her large extended family.  Helen attended elementary school at St. Benedict and New Prague High School.  She married Ralph J. Weiers on September 29, 1951 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan.

Helen was a tireless volunteer.  She was a woman of great faith and many of her activities centered around her church.  She was active at St. John’s Catholic Church in CCW and Deanery, was a religion teacher, former choir member, past Eucharistic Minister, and a volunteer Eucharistic Minister at Philipp Square.  She held offices with Catholic United and was a past officer with the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary and received the State KC Auxilian of the Year award.  She also added to the beauty of St. John’s Church by painting the statues of the Last Supper under the altar and the angels that grace the holy water fonts at the back of church.  Her volunteerism also saw her on the Queen of Peace Auxiliary, volunteer at the hospital and a member of many of the card groups.

Helen loved to visit and connect with others.  When her children were young, she was a 4H leader.  She was a member of the County Liner’s Extension group for over 50 years, receiving a leadership award from the home council.  Her love of quilting was not just limited to sewing for her family but extended to the Silver Threads, a group of women who gathered every Wednesday to make quilts for missions and fundraisers.  In her leisure time, she enjoyed cards, bingo, board games, and gardening.  Her many friends and her beloved family will miss the cohesiveness and positivity that she brought to every gathering.  Helen epitomized kindness and hospitality.

Helen is survived by her children, Mary Jo (Dick) Hruby of New Prague, Gordon (Claudia) Weiers of Glenwood, Rodney (Debra) Weiers of Silver Lake, Monica (Chuck) Valek of Belle Plaine, Margie (Jack) Ferguson of Minneapolis, Carol (Dale) Finnesgaard of Minneapolis, Bill (Anne) Weiers of New Prague; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph on March 27, 2018; parents; sister, Pauline Schindle;  brothers, Ted, Alfred, Norbert, and John Neisen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, October 25, 2021 at 10 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill with Father Eugene Theisen officiating. Visitation will take place from 4-7 PM Sunday evening and from 7:30 – 9:15 Monday morning at Bruzek Funeral Home.  The family kindly requests that masks are worn at both the funeral home and at church.  Burial will occur at St. John’s Cemetery.
