Big performances highlight DRS week

The past week saw some outstanding individual performances in the Dakota- Rice-Scott League. Veseli’s Mike Bartusek went 5-for-6 in a loss to Lonsdale, Mike Flicek and Eric Iverson both had four hits for Montgomery in a win over Shakopee, Derek Masberg threw a three-hit shutout as Union Hill defeated Prior Lake, while Prior Lake’s Cole Bjorge had four hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs in a win over Webster. Riley Ahern threw a one-hit shutout in New Market’s 3-0 win over New Prague, negating a three-hit, 12-strikeout performance by the Orioles’ Nathan Sprouls. Jordan Goracke had three hits and six RBIs for St. Patrick in a win over Shakopee, and Zach Breedan of Lonsdale went 4-for-5 with two homers and a double in a loss to St. Benedict.

However there was very little change in the league standings, as New Market maintains a healthy lead with an 18-1 record. St. Patrick, New Prague and Faribault are in the next three spots in the standings, with Union Hill and Montgomery hoping to move into the top four and earn a bye into the region playoffs.

Last week’s action: Tuesday, July 3 Veseli 5, Lonsdale 1 Lonsdale went into the ninth inning with a 1-0 lead, but Veseli tied the game in the top of the ninth and scored four runs in the 10th to take a 5-1 lead. Lonsdale scored its lone run in the fourth when Ryan Thompson drove in Trevor Smrekar. Tyler Busch had two hits and had three RBIs for Veseli, including a game-tying single in the ninth while Nathan Simon and Nate Novak both had two hits and one RBI. Novak drove in the winning run. Ben Doerr added a double for the Warriors. Matt Perkinson allowed just one run and six hits in 10 innings for the win, striking out five. Phil Tisdel pitched 10 innings for Lonsdale and took the loss.

Wednesday, July 4 Aces 6, Warriors 3 Lonsdale and Veseli went into extra innings for the second day in a row, but this time it was Lonsdale coming out on top, scoring three runs in the 12th inning for the 6-3 win. Justin Johnson had two hits and an RBI for Lonsdale. Daniel Turner pitched 3-1/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out two for the win. Joseph Sabal started and went 8-2/3 innings. Veseli’s Mike Bartusek had five hits in six atbats and Logan Reger and Nate Novak had two hits each. Ben Doerr started and went 10 innings, with Jackson Jirik, Jason Kazlauskas and Nathan Simon pitching in relief.

Friday, July 6 Orioles 6, Warriors 0 New Prague scored two runs in the first and four more in the fifth to claim a 6- 0 win over Veseli. Aaron Kes and Austin Bachman each scored two runs, while James Fuerniss had two RBIs for the Orioles. Joel Zimmerman pitched seven innings and allowed six hits for the win, striking out four. Bryce Novak struck out four and gave up one hit in two innings of relief. For Veseli, Ben Doerr and Tyler Busch each had two hits. Veseli’s Bryan Schmitz pitched eight innings and took the loss against his former team.

Mallards 13, Coyotes 9 Mike Flicek and Eric Iverson both went 4-for-5 to lead Montgomery to a 13-9 win over Shakopee. Flicek had two doubles and a home run, scoring four runs and getting four RBIs. Iverson had one run scored and drove in three. Mike Kocina had two hits and three RBIs and Jake Mc- Cabe had three hits and two runs scored. Owen Little pitched five innings and gave up seven hits to take the win. Robbie Marshall and Tyler Bednar pitched in relief.

Bulldogs 1, Lakers 0 Derek Masberg pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out eight, while his Union Hill Bulldogs banged out 10 hits in a 7-0 win at Faribault. Jeff Dietz, Conrad Masberg and Danny Beckius each had two hits, with Dietz, Conrad Masberg and Eric Bisek each getting doubles. Bisek had two RBIs. Egan Bonde took the loss for Faribault.

Sunday, July 8 Lakers 7, Mallards 4 A four-run first inning proved to be Montgomery’s undoing as Faribault jumped to an early lead and defeated the host Mallards 7-4. Montgomery’s Johnny Krocak had three hits, including a double and home run. Jake McCabe and Owen Little also had two hits each. Tyler Francis took the win for Faribault, with Ted Christian taking the loss. Joey Grote had a save for the Lakers.

Mudcats 12, Sox 2 Prior Lake got the jump on Webster with four runs in the first inning on their way to a 12-2 win. Cole Bjorge had four hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs to lead the Mudcats. Ben Morrison, Corbin Cross and Derek Kay had two hits each. Jake Lehrer had a home run. Jake Schmidt pitched seven innings to get the win, with Zach Lovera pitching two innings of relief. Webster had two hits from Jeff Fredrickson. John Barten started and took the loss.

Muskies 3, Orioles 0 Riley Ahern pitched a onehit shutout to lead New Market to a 3-0 win over New Prague. Ahern struck out six and walked just two. Andy Henkemeyer had a two-run home run to lead the Muskies’ offense. The Orioles’ Dan Novak had his team’s only hit. Nathan Sprouls allowed just four hits for New Prague, striking out 12 in taking the loss.

Express 6, Warriors 3 Jason Grimm had two hits and two RBIs and Andrew Hanson and Ryan Bastyr each had two hits as Elko defeated Veseli 6-3. The Warriors had a hit and an RBI from Nate Novak, with other hits coming from Cody Shimota, Matt Perkinson, Tyler Busch and Jason Kazlauskas. Ross Bastyr pitched seven innings for the win, with Nick Bentley and Dylan Thomas pitching in relief. Matt Perkinson took the loss, with Kazlauskas and Nathan Simon pitching in relief.

Saints 10, Aces 9 St. Benedict scored five runs in the sixth inning to claim a 10-9 win over Lonsdale. The Saints had two hits each from Michael Lambrecht, Andrew Huss, Zach Bakko, Paul Hentges and Scott Eischens. Bakko and Eischens each had two RBIs. Matthias Duevel got the win in relief of Jeremy Heitkamp, with Hentges getting a save. Lonsdale’s Daniel Turner and Zach Breedan each went 4- for-5, with Breedan hitting two homers and a double for five runs batted in. Marty Kalina, Jordan Yetzer, Thomas Hoppert and Justin Johnson on two hits each. Tyler Milford got the loss in relief of Phil Tisdel. Cole Pint pitched 2-2/3 inning of relief as well.

Irish 20, Coyotes 9 St. Patrick blasted 22 hits and Ryan Friedges had a home run as St. Patrick defeated Shakopee 20-9. Jordan Goracke had three hits and six RBIs, while Seth Ambroz and Will Walsh and Kyle Sticha each had three hits as well. Kevin Pexa, Matt Pexa and Jack Friedges each had two hits. Nick Spitt got the start and Phillip Garcia pitched 2-2/3 inning of relief to get the win. Zach Seurer also pitched an inning. For Shakopee, Alex Pauly, Logan Becker, Tanner Graff and Jeff Hohenstein each had two hits. Jesse Nystrom took the loss for the Coyotes.
